You guys may remember this old thread I started.
It's one I have gone back to often to check names of books recommended by you lot.
SO I decided to start a new one with a more meaningful title.
If you want to recommend a book or book series, please do so here.

I don't see how Wot and Sot are similar i've read Wot series 6 times through every book and i've recently been reading Sot, they ain't even similar really, Richard only has one girl really while rand gets three, the source isn't even similar tot he magic of a wizard. THe creatures are different. The only possible similarity is as u mentioned the sisters of light and how there were sisters of dark. But apart from that there hasn't been much that is the same. But i do agree. I think i partly regret reading Sot cause it is such a drag and quite boring. I will be like 10 years before i even attempt to re-read the Sot series, while the Wot series i'll probably re-read the whole thing through again just before the final book comes out.
So in conclusion there are some similarities between Wot and Sot, but nothing really definitive. But in the end if your going to read one of these series. Read Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan because things actually seem to progress in his stories.

Its the plot - \ examples Main Character - Struggles with the power, with women There's a tower full of magical women in both Evil bad guys are similiar etc. etc.. I do agree with Bageled on this one, you can see where he got the ideas/inspiration for the series...however the writing styles different and there is enough difference to let me still enjoy the SoT series, just wish it was more original

meh, i loved the sword of truth series. I've only read it twice cause it is a long series. However The wheel of time is just as long and twice as boring in most parts.
I've heard both chalice and bageled say that parts are long and you could effectively cut out a whole book in the WOT series and still know whats going on.
I do agree that they are very similar. Perhaps because i read SOT first, i like it more than WOT...

WoT is def drawn out alot...then when you get to the latest book written by the new author since Jordans death, it seems quite rushed because he's trying to finish the series and bring everything to a close, but at least its not boring in parts

but chalice nearly every fantasy story follows that formula, main character struggles with the power and has troubles with women or man depending on sex. Then u got evil bad guyz who trying to take over the planet.

I think I might have mentioned this before, but what I found annoying in the WoT (and I only got half way through it...lol) was the repetitiveness. Nynaeve kept flicking her braid and you couldn't go through one chapter without her doing that like a hundred times.
Still a good series, and I did enjoy what I read of it.

Apart from indignant stares and knuckle creaking braid squeezing it gets less repetitive towards the 7th or 8th book. I feel it's finally starting to pick up some speed, and the female characters are finally not getting away with being whiny, self-centered stuck up bitches as often. Perrin ftw btw.

A new year, new books to read, and older ones to re-read.
If it hasn't been mentioned before, Philip Pullman's "His Dark Materials" trilogy (Northern Lights, The Subtle Knife, The Amber Spyglass). Re-reading them now and I love them.

excellent books epically the 2nd and 3rd ones to bad the movie was to fast to absorb all the content while on the subject of a good read is the book trilogy House of many rooms i remember reading it in high school and thinking it was good - have to find them again and re read them

To Kill A Mockingbird's ending makes it worthwhile reading through the shitload of boring parts.

the only problem is that John Lennon is dead now,.. so whats the point of getting all fired up with this book now?

It's just a great book. However, it is associated with a number of murders including the Mark David Chapman Murder of John Lennon- I guess it hits the spot with the psychos. All the more reason to read it.
