I'm looking into getting an apple laptop for the wife. The home is turning into an apple environment via ipads, ipods, iphone and apple tv, so I figured for ease of networking I'd keep get her an apple laptop over a pc. She would use it for web browsing, movie streaming. Looks like the two choices are MacBook pro, or MacBook Air.... Any advice?

Thought you might Sammy but in all honesty, the reasoning for buying one isn't there. First, Bageled would be introducing another OS into his home network in OSX, which isn't the same as iOS. The unifying piece to all those devices is the software that should be known as malware, aka iTunes, which you can get for virtually any platform. So won't make a difference to his networking. All he will be doing is introducing another OS (that he will have to learn and support) whilst over paying for the hardware at the same time.... seems and odd choice....

Oh fuck Itunes, it took me 2 hours the other night to remove all their fucking DRM shitz from my songs! Yes it is true that he will introduce a major virus by purchasing that OS/Apple. Would be so better off with a nice slim Samsung Series 9 Lappy with the touch screen and Windows 8.1, Now she would loooove that.... http://www.samsung.com/au/series9/http://www.samsung.com/au/consumer/pc-peripherals/notebook-pc/ativ-book/NP900X4C-A01AU-gallery

to be honest it would depend how well she would be able to adjust to the OS, i would go as bohica said and go for the mac book air, not much fuss with it. that is if she wants to stay with apple stuff. and if worse come to worse and she hates the OS you can always install windows on it. from my experience itunes is no different on both windows and mac. just with mac you get options to stream the screen to the apple tv if you wanted top shared a vid or something. sammy apple even gives you an option to convert to another format (and when i last checked it would remove the DRM which you agreed to use )

Guys my pc is not on the home network. My home network right now is a wireless repeater for mobiles and ipads, and a powerline to my xbox 360/media player. I'm thinking of replacing the xbox with an apple tv so I can mirror the ipad on the tv. So I hear what you're saying, but that's not me. I figure networking an apple laptop to work with the apple tv and the ipad will be easy enough that my wife could do it. I fucking hate it when I'm trying to relax and my wife dumps a computer problem on my lap. Hate it. That Samsung is pretty sexy though. Is there anyway to get cheaper apple laptops? They're pricey!

If you can get yourself a 2nd Generation Apple TV, you can also jailbreak it and turn it into a pretty handy media player in its own right... has to be 2nd Gen though, the jailbreak hasn't been developed for the 3rd yet. Apple pricing is pretty static, not much room to move so you won't get a lot of discount anywhere, even Education pricing that we use at work only knocks $100 or so off the price of a new iMac. Your best bet for cheap is to go a previous generation a week or two after a new generation product has been released (eg: get a 2013 Macbook when the 2014 model is announced) or buy a refurbished model from the Apple website. There's a lot of Apple bashers around here... but as the old saying goes "Horses for Courses"... I keep my gaming rig PC/Windows, but every other machine in the house, including what the kids play on (Steam games like HL2, TF2, L4D etc) are iMacs... and my partner has a Macbook Air... I know exactly where you're coming from bageled, there is nothing more frustrating than working in ICT and then coming home to do basic tech support... at least I've found that the kids and the woman are pretty self sufficient with the Macs.

I would like to see ( out side of myself; damit; bohica; virg and possibly bageled) who has actually used Mac OS X ( not iOS ) for longer than a month. You have to approach it from the angle that you have no clue about pc's and want your hand held

We have it at work for developing on, as unfortunately it is a supported platform...hate it with a passion...so have used it for over 6 years... does that count? I think it has its place, and in fact, for kids I think the ipad is the best tablet available.(yes I know that is iOS), but generally I detest apple products as every facet of them is designed to lock you into their platform (ie a Vendor lock-in strategy). bageled's experience above is a good example of this. The reality is that for his wife a Surface 2 tablet to replace his ipad and allow him to stream to his tv via his existing equipment, and for half the price, without having to introduce a new OS, get rid of a games machine, or suffer more of the pain that is the general apple eco system.

maybe haha i know supporting them for 4 years i agree with most of what you mean about the os, it is very do it our way or get lost attitude but there is some aspects of it that makes it excellent. i know what bageled is doing but instead of removing things it could be added as an option or using it as a trial even.
