Well the new laptop is off the table. My wife said she would rather take the money and go on a shopping spree, which turned into "us" going on a clothes shopping outing together. Which turned into me leaving the room and dropping the subject.
This has been an interesting discussion however.
I agree with cow about the whole lock in thing though.
What got me started was the apple tv I got for my mum for Christmas(thanks Al). I set it up and linked in her ipad in about 2 minutes. It was SO EASY, the hardest part was getting the hdmi cable into the back of the tv. With a PC I would expect 1 - 2 hours wondering what idiot wrote the instructions, and surfing the web trying to figure out why it isn't working.
Cow is also right about the ipad. My 2 year old can navigate it, poorly, mostly due to clumsy fingers, but she can do it.
Also, I want a surface.

I have a surface 2, it is rather awesome to be honest, as a good bridge between a laptop and a tablet but I wouldn’t say the hardware or the software is as robust as the ipad which is why I think the ipad is better for kids. However the surface is great for productivity…. which is what I needed but that’s for a different thread…

Hooking up the apple tv should have taken the same amount of time as hooking up the xbox, which is its real competitor. To be able to put your youtube videos on the screen from the ipad, have you downloaded the XboxGlass app (it is available for ipad)?

Yay. I have a surface pro and enjoy it. My wife and kids have iPads an I have my surface pro.

I enjoy it as I treat it like a laptop and this download whatever the fuck I want and do what I want with any app I install.

Has some downsides but not as restrictive as a apple product. Imho.
