I thought America didn't have a minimum wage? Isn't that why you have to tip at restaurants?

They do have a minimum wage, its about $7.50 an hour although it can vary state to state, also there is a provision in the law that says that employees recieving tips are entitled to a much lesser minimum wage, something like $2.50 an hour in some states.
For comparison our minimum wage is $15 an hour last I checked (perhaps lower for juniors) and casual employees actually recieve a slightly higher wage. This minimum still applies even if you recieve tips.

The other factor in the US is that they have a lot of illegal immigration from mexico, which is a huge source of unskilled labour (often they can't even speak english), and often willing to work for less than minimum wage. Some people get angry that 'they took mah jorb' but I read in one study that there is such a large number of illegal immigrants performing unskilled labour for less than minimum wage that the economy would collapse if they replaced them with legal minimum wage workers. They also do a lot of 'undesirable' jobs like cleaning toilets or dangerous, unsafe jobs and some suggest that they would have trouble finding american citizens willing to fill these roles.

I made $5.50 an hour when I lived in Washington state 10 years ago, it is largely meaningless to talk dollar figures though, it ain't apples with apples. I remember the dollar figure cost of things was quite low, but I also remember the guys I worked with pulling massive hours trying to get ahead. The good thing about all those mexicans is heaps of good mexican food, and cheap cocaine, and I mean cheap. Weed cost the same per gram as cocaine, last time i checked here cocaine costed more than 10 times as much as weed.

a guy who visits america frequently told me that people like waiters and stuff earn what our juniors earn (like $8 an hour he said) which is why you tip them.

He says the good thing about it is you can get like $30 from wages but go home with $200 in tips.

I dunno I reckon the federal budgets made some good moves this year... especially giving incentives for single mothers to go to work, or suspend their benefits... I know HEAPS of young girls who decided all they wanted to do in life was pump out a kid or 5 and just live off the taxpayers dollar. The kids end up being the sort that run around on the streets causing trouble, so anything that stops that is a-ok in my book.
