Dune 2, generally regarded as the grandfather of the real time strategy genre (like Wolf 3D was to FPS games) has been rewritten as a HTML5 web app.

You can play for free in your browser here:
http://play-dune.com/

No software is required to be installed, beyond Firefox or Chrome. Games are saved on the server so you aren't tied to one device.

This is an old DOS game from the early 90's so don't be too surprised at how it looks or controls if you've never played something this old before.

This has tempted me to get my hands on Dune 2000 again.

Edit: Turns out Dune 2000 is available for free since its become Abandonware. For those who dont know. Dune 2000 is a remake of Dune 2 on the Red Alert 1 Engine from Westwood which did make Dune 2 as well.

it's not abandonware, EA still holds the rights to it.
If you download from an abandonware site its regarded as piracy even if its not available for sale any longer.

However I have no qualms about downloading old games so go for it.

There is an open source remake which is free but not perfect: http://openra.res0l.net/

Its amazing to see how far along the technology of the internet is moving forward. Its quite impressive to have a game like Dune 2 run on HTML5. I've herd of Doom and Wolfenstein being made possible as well. I'm not too sure yet though.

you know my only issue with dune 2 (based upon memory from 10+  years ago alone) was that you could not highlight all your troops. if you wanted to send in 20 tanks it was, click tank 1 send them to A, click tank 2 send them to A, so on...so on... for 20 tanks). apart from that awesome game. and playing with Atreides the Harkonnen were really hard after about mission 8

It's been done already

DOOM was done but iD pulled it down

Lemmings was also done in HTML
