Good luck. I worked up there for 3 years and it gave me some of the most amazing and unique experiences of my life. Where in the country will you be working?

Mate good luck. My brothers did FIFO there. I strongly recommend life insurance addon and any trainings that can improve your life expectancy. But depends where in png you are. They just saw some fucked shite working over there.

Dude they are Natives in the finest sense and will rip you limb from limb, most parts for white ppl are a NO GO! Full 24/7 security by armed guards and that's traveling, working or sleeping. It's as hardcore as fuck! If you are able to carry a concealable weapon I certainly fucking would. I know folk from PNG and i also have a few friends and family working on the Gold Mines.

It doesn't seem that bad (yet) sammy. The camp is full of locals with the expats being the minority. With OSL, because the locals work here and the land owners get royalties, they know if they do anything serious they loose all the money. I've still heard the odd story, but it's come about because the person who was attacked fucked up in the first place.

It's like anywhere, act like a fuckwit and it will come back and bite you in the arse. Treat the locals with respect and dignity and they will literally do anything for you. A lot of expats make the mistake of thinking the locals are stupid or ignorant. The PNG nationals are some of the most creative people I've met and once you understand their culture and where they're coming from it makes life easier. The people of the southern highlands have a warrior culture which makes them appear aggressive to outsiders at first. But win them over and you can use that. If you have time while your there, try a get to Kavieng, Rabaul, Tufi and Alotau. There is some amazing diving, fishing and war relics at these places. The coastal areas are also generally safer and more open to outsiders from the start.
