As much as the steambox is a nice idea on paper. You would only have access to a small portion of the steam store library. Better off sticking with Windows.

Considering the price of those pre-made ones, you're right. Why would you cripple yourself with an operating system that can only run a fraction of the games available, when it costs the same as a normal Windows pc that can run any Steam game.

You can get great wireless keyboards and mice these days too, so you can just sit back on the couch and play. I've got a Logitech keyboard and mouse that work perfectly from my couch 2-3m from the tv, and laser mice work perfectly fine on leather. I don't know if I'd play an FPS with my mouse on the sofa seat next to me, but it's fine for everything else.

I think the idea is to target console gamers who would rather buy a black box, plug it in and then not have to worry about it, instead of dealing with a PC running Windows and setting it up to run in their living room. The steam box basically gives you all the purported advantages of a fixed-hardware console, and many games are on Steam for  a fraction of the price of most console games.

As for us who all have gaming PC's and already have an extensive steam library - I don't think we are the target audience.

Will it work? Time will tell.

Given the pricing I've seen, I doubt it will work any time soon. Hopefully Valve will put pressure on games developers using Steam to support Linux.

Hardware to suit your budget is the main benefit I can see over consoles, and once the mainstream games go compatible, it could work as a console.

Most Valve games are more PC gamer style, and who would fork out $400+ to play indie games? Not much else is on Linux yet...
