Once those changes are applied to ballistics and missiles, I imagine it won't really matter where the server is

See I would have thought that lasers should have been a hitscan weapon and therefore shouldn't have needed leading in the first place. (I don't know how they work in MWO but that's how I would have thought it was done based on other games)
I doubt they will apply this change to missiles or ballistics as those are projectile weapons - when you fire the projectile must be spawned and tracked on the server. which is why ballistics/missiles have a a much larger firing delay as well as requiring leading the target.
As opposed to hitscan where it should be simply the client reporting that the target was in range and under the targeting reticle at the time the trigger was pulled,. Much less work for the server to do, to keep a consistent game state between all other clients so the effects of lag are much less pronounced.

I agree that client-side prediction is the ideal solution. Unfortunately, there are concerns that this approach is - on its own - too easily hacked. I imagine this is why PGI has implemented a system wherein the server conducts a 'rewind' to verify the legitimacy of each client-side prediction.

I expect we will see this implemented on non-hit-scan weapons, as their approach should work just as well there.

Also, fantastic sig.

Deathshead, Hunt3r, Shawns_maggot, and myself represented Death Inc last night at the oceanic brawl. Just a run down of what happened; There was about 50-60 players logged in and we were dropping in a 2 2 2 2 composition. Every couple of rounds we just went up to the lobby and then chose new teams to play with after a short discussion.

We got recognised by a few people that dropped against us which was very funny.

All in all it was a fun time and hopefully someone posts something up on the MWO forums because I believe events such as these will go a long way to getting a server based in Oceania.
