I would assume not, but it is entirely possible. A compelling story line didn't seem to be a priority for the hobbit films.
Perhaps he meant like a catapult?

Bageled, what did you think would happen when they took a book that takes 8 hours to read (that's for a normal slow reader. People that read a lot of books are obviously going to be much faster), and made it into a trilogy that takes 8 hours to watch?

You''re pretty much right Zoo, the audio book is only 6 hours long. http://www.audible.com.au/pd/Classics/The-Hobbit-Audiobook/B00FH2UDJY
On principle I object the metric of one book equals one movie. Harry Potter Goblet of Fire is a good example of trying to get the whole book in and making a shit movie. Game of thrones is a good example of making one book into 8 (or 10) hours of video.

I don't agree with the metric, but I agree that The Hobbit was bloated beyond all belief. The last movie was 3 hours of dreary sword swinging. I read the other day that the directors cut of the final hobbit has just come out, so it is even longer, you get 10 discs of extra's, and intriguingly is R rated. Apparently the battle scene becomes exceptionally gory.
Needed more boobies.

Clearly Peter Jackson missed the memo
