Plug on an ext monitor and see if that displays anything.

If not - pull the HDD and plug it into another PC to read the data. (quite an easy task if you know what to do)

It started working so backed it up.
I have pulled HDD's before from laptops.
Had a smashed laptop at work that we used in workshop for ages with external monitor. LCDs are quite pretty when you smash them.
Was checking Estop program cause it was working/resetting funny hit buttons in wrong order machine clamp came down I hit the Estop the clamp continued and smashed laptop, then safety screen came across and swept laptop off machine onto floor, after 10 sec of disbelief I thought "F*&k that might not have been the best place to put the laptop"
went to workshop the boss looked at me and said "are you all right you didn't hurt yourself" - "nope but the laptop is a little worse for wear, and that Estop defiantly does not work correctly..... can I have the other laptop?"
We got a PC on a cart after that
