SO, I've got a very old tower, and three crts, 40inchers by the look of them, ie fucking huge.
I want to chuck them, where do I take them?

stick an Apple sticker on them and then sell them for a couple of grand... suckers wont know the difference anyway...
failing that.. they go to the tip. Usually , if they still work, there will be a tip shop where you drop them in, and they try and sell them...

Yeah, they are massive, weight heaps too. CRT gives a really good image though, cost me $2,500 ( http://www.eizo.com.au/products/coloredge/index.php) to get a flat screen that could do the same job as $75 second hand crt. The colour shift across a standard flat panel is dramatic. It's fine for most things, but doing graphic design on a standard flat screen is near impossible. A solid red square will be orange at the top and a deep red at the bottom.

could give this mob a call http://www.computer-recycling.com.au/about.phpbig monitors like that probably won't be reused, unfortunately - most likely the metals will be reclaimed from them. you aren't supposed to just dump them in the rubbish though because they're full of lead and other nasties.
