more stupidity, she gets austudy to help her pay for her education, then claims her education expenses as a tax deduction! Am I missing something here, isn't that exactly what Austudy is for, paying for books and getting to and from school?

You honestly think that AusStudy pays for everything that one needs to live and study at the same time? What these people receive is bare minimum. I think it's fine to claim back some money on tax, it wouldn't even be an amount worth mentioning to the average person, but to a student it can make a huge difference.
