« on: 30/11/2011, 12:46 PM »

Hey guys, another request? o,o

I need to learn a bit more about using SQL, well MySQL as I wish to run it using my new website. but id rather use my own system, over some other persons.

Any links or guides would be welcomed.

there's plenty of tutorials on the net if you google them

This is a decent starting point:

I suggest just installing MySQL on your PC (maybe even download microsoft virtual PC and set it up in a VM) and having a play around to learn it.

What are you trying to achieve on your website? Do you just have some sort of CMS or something that requires a SQL backed?

I hate using the same script over and over for posting information and updates, so Id rather set up a login system, and have a posting option. I have sql installed already, was using it for an old private server and website. But instead of using a generic free web software, id rather make my own system as its the best way to learn something.

Writing that sort of thing is pretty involved, you'll also need some sort of front end code like PHP to hook into the database from your web page.

Maybe a good idea is to download and install a free prepackaged CMS and have a look at their database structure and how the front end hooks into it.

Be mindful of security too. You might think nobody will ever bother hacking a tiny website with only a few visitors but I've seen it happen several times. No target is too obscure.

can't really help more than that as my knowledge is more on the administration side rather than the design/programming side

Best way to learn something is to create something new really. No use re inventing the wheel if you dont have to. Building your own will take forever as well. As Donut said, security has to be tight, a simple SQL password system wont stop them getting in.

But yeah SQL is just the databases, usually for a site people use php or asp.net to connect via some other code to the database. It really is a lot of effort if something out there already exists Sad

I'll probably go for PhP, as it is relatively simple to use. haven't tried asp yet. I may be getting a little help from a buddy back home in NZ, so I might not have to do a hell of a lot lol.. which sucks kind of, but anything to get this ball rolling.

I was originally going to use PHPbb3, and send topic posts too the index page, but thats a little boring. I'd rather enjoy the thrill of the ride (and the stress of getting it working).

Anyway, regardless of whats going through my mind, thanks guys Smiley Much appreciated.

Me too. I had to use asp, which talks to C#, which talks to VB which talks tothe database. It was crap. I hate it all lol. But yeah, stick with PHP, it doesnt take much to get it talking to a database.

Maybe just try using like wordpress or joomla. They have plugins that can change how everything works lol.
