now the news has caught on  Cry

Quote
An 11-year-old girl who gained online fame with a foul-mouthed rant has been placed under police protection after she became the target of internet bullies.

The girl, Jessi Slaughter, drew attention to herself with a bile-filled YouTube video after unfounded rumours spread through blogs that she was having an affair with Dahvie Vanity, lead singer of Emo band Blood on the Dance Floor.

"If you can't stop hating ... I'll pop a glock in your mouth and make a brain slushie," she said in the video, which has been viewed on YouTube over 300,000 times.

The video caught the attention of the notorious internet community 4chan, a known haven for "trolls" who take enjoyment in harassing vulnerable targets.

Personal details about Jessi, including her social networking accounts, her home phone number and her address in Florida, were circulated online, leading to harassing phone calls and online vandalism.

The harassment intensified after Jessi and her father posted a follow-up video on YouTube, in which Jessi wept and pleaded with her tormentors.

Her father then proceeded to scream at the camera, saying that if anyone came near his daughter they would "be arrested".

This video has been viewed more than 1.7 million times on YouTube and has spawned numerous parodies and remixes.

Jessi has since been placed under police protection after receiving death threats and a criminal investigation has been launched into the matter.

The girl's mother, Dianne Leondhart, told US website Gawker that the family was so petrified they were sleeping in shifts to keep guard against the bullies.

and there wanting to use it to promote an internet filter -

Quote
THE case of a US girl who was hounded by internet stalkers into police protection highlights the need for content filtering, an Australian academic says.

Eleven-year-old Jessi Slaughter has been targeted with death threats after her address and phone number were shared on internet forums by pranksters in response to a YouTube video she posted from her bedroom.

Her mother said she hasn't seen her daughter's video and told Gawker she "doesn't go on the computer".

If she had, she would have seen her daughter become something of a minor celebrity on tween gossip site StickyDrama, where she was linked to a relationship with the lead singer of Blood on the Dancefloor and made an overnight YouTube star for her foul-mouthed tirade against her "haters".

It attracted the attention of trollers - internet users who deliberately provoke reactions - who then promoted Jessi as a target for hate mail and prank calls.

Professor Matt Warren, the head of Deakin University's School of Information Systems, said as long as parents who don't understand the internet kept giving their children access to it, there needed to be ways to control its use.

"You simply can't have free access to the internet," he said.

"It has to be controlled, censored and people have to be held accountable for their actions on it.

"We punish people who drink, we punish people who speed and we have to implement laws to that effect when it comes to the internet."

Prof Warren said that parents might think allowing children to access the internet in their bedroom was a way of helping them do their schoolwork, but the reality was, a lot of parents simply didn't understand the medium.

"The child isn't ethically aware of what they're doing," he said.

"It's also an education issue with that person and the parents aren't necessarily the ones that should be giving that training, because they don't understand it either.

"Parents will be concerned about their child going out all hours, but they don't care about them staying on the internet all hours."

Prof Warren said educating children about the dangers of the internet should be part of the national curriculum and that cybersafety should be an election issue.

Both major parties have shelved their plans for filtering the internet until after the election, which Prof Warren said was an oversight.

"Governments still don't understand the huge impact of the information age on our society," he said.

"Five hundred million people using Facebook has huge implications.

"Cybersafety and cyberbullying ties into censorship and control, so it should be an election issue. But does it win votes?

"It will just need a government to make a hard decision to say this has to stop."

A pilot study into teaching ethical behaviour on the net has been under way in 150 schools nationwide since last year.

Recommendations on how it fits into the national curriculum will be put forward after the election.

One proposal would see schools given the right to respond to student's activities on the net outside school hours.

Dr Helen McGrath - also a Deakin colleague of Prof Warren's - was a contributor to the Commonwealth Government’s Cybersafety Joint Committee in June last year.

She said it was unrealistic to expect parents to monitor their children around the clock and that the onus was on schools to give kids the tools to protect themselves.

"It's all very well telling an 11-year-old they can't have a computer in their bedroom, but when they get to 14, it's like saying you have to make all your phone calls in front of us," she said.

Unlike her colleague, Dr McGrath doesn't believe content filtering has any role in educating children about the dangers of the internet.

"It really comes back down to making sure they understand what they're getting into," she said.

"You don't take the keys off them when you teach them to drive - we talk about what's safe and what's legal."

Parents concerned about cybersafety and cyberbullying can access a wide range of information and tools at the Government's online safety initiative Cybersmart

ugh this story sucks

Firstly, this jessi chick is a fucking moron.

Secondly, /b/ is full of fucking morons that think they're special cos they visit the same website and laugh at the same inane, insipid shit every day

Thirdly, Professor Matt Warren is a fucking moron who doesn't understand why the national filter is technically unfeasible. Nor does he understand that the government-supplied and commercially available filters that you can install on your own PC are a much better option for protecting your child online if you lack the knowledge or inclination to do it yourself. He also doesn't understand how this will inevitably be turned against the populace and used to stifle free speech.

Furthermore he seems to have a fundamental lack of understanding of how the proposed internet filter will actually work... it would not have prevented this silly bitch from posting her tantrum on youtube.

In summary, fuck this gay earth

The girl is 11 - it IS the parents responsibility to monitor her.  Thats what you do as a parent isnt it?  There is obviously no discipline in their home otherwise the parents could infact control her internet access...
I have to agree that the 'filter' will not help with these issues like ppl claim...

Exactly. The parents should look after their kids, and not expect the government to do it for them. Thats just bad parenting, and the rest of the population is not their kids and should not be subjected to the same
restrictions.

Plus, kids need to be able to think for themselves. Like the old saying goes, 'if you gunna be dumb you gotta be tough'. They gotta get into a bit of trouble every now and then to learn about consequences. I'm not saying they should run around on the street trashing cars and bashing people (because the cops let them go without any consequences, thus they learn nothing). Its like how they reckon that kids that never played in the dirt have weaker immune systems and at greater risks of developing allergies... all this sheltering from the real world is detrimental. The internet is a global frontier, what happens if they happen to leave the safety of our little nation?

If we expect the government to look out for us like our parents because we are too stupid to look out for ourselves, that is the very definition of a nanny state.

But it's so much easier to whinge until the government fixes your problems. Plus you then get to whinge about Australia being a nanny state and not letting anyone have any freedom.

I totally agree Donut. I intend to let my kids play in the dirt and I want to let them learn from their own mistakes. A good parent gives advice and is there to support their kid if they don't take it. I made a fair few mistakes as a kid, and hopefully I can help my kids learn from my mistakes so they don't have to waste time making the same mistakes I did.

Yep. Making mistakes is what being a kid is all about.
Our lawmakers of the last 10 years or so seem to have forgotten that.

Electro shock therapy at age 5...no more problems with your problem child, unless drooling is an issue?

She's 11..poor darlin, she's just a kid and a product of her fucked up society and fucked up parents with their fucked up morals...I for one dont get off on giving 11 year olds shit (unless its Inwalda)  and any adult who does should be ashamed of themselves.

What kind of fucking idiot politician really thinks an Internet filter will work, if they do it..I'm moving to Sweden.

I have access to a computer with internet, first off, jessi slaughter is not some innocent girl, she posted videos, several, that are about her saying how better she is than everyone, yes, everyone. her first video was called, I think, "rage and you lose" and it pretty much forces people to rage due to her talking about her rosey smelling shit. and "she's barely on the computer" my ass, she has made several videos even with one including her redneck like dad famously saying "YOU DUN GOOFED".

and the internet filter, well that can go fuck itself with an iron stick, no site should be censored, no matter how terrible it may be to someone. the internet is for everyone to share everything and people choose to go on sites, or get rick rolled, either way they should be careful to start with.
