Speaking of lathe, there was an incident at Yale in the US just last month http://abcnews.go.com/US/yale-university-limits-access-equipment-student-death/story?id=13372558When I broke my hand I met a guy at the fracture clinic with plaster from his hands to halfway up his biceps on both arms. He was working on a hydraulic log splitter, these things are basically a guillotine that forces down about 2 tons of pressure. normally its operated with a button you press with your knee. The idea is that if you can press the button with your knee you are too far back to reach into the machine. Well one log got caught on the blade so instead of shutting the machine off and banging it off with a mallet, he reached into the machine to pull it out with his hands... then managed to bump the button. Press came down on both his arms. Luckily the press doesn't come all the way down, theres a gap of a couple of inches - otherwise he'd have lost both his arms. He was wearing lon g rubber gloves and they basically both overflowed with blood. He obviously couldn't use his mobile so he had to run down the road and find someone to help him. Last I heard he's ok now but basically was in and out of surgery for about 6 months This Is London |

I heard a funny story from one of my suppliers about a guy who tried to get compo from injuring himself with the guillotine. He decided the best way was to cut off the tip of this finger. The guillo has a two button press, so you need to use both hands to operate it, and it also has a laser beam switch across the front of the blade which if interupted stops the machine operating. So this guy is working the afternoon shift on his own, he rigs up a couple of broomsticks with strings to work the buttons, cimbs on top of the machine to get his hand behind the laser beam. He activates the blade, takes off the tip of his middle finger, faints from shock, falls down the front of the machine, dropped about 10 feet, hits the ground head first and gets knocked out properly, and the night crew finds him on the floor unconcious. The cherry on top is the whole thing was caught on the cct system.
