Yes another thought coming from last night.

Grenadiers and smoke grenades.

This didn't occur to me until after the round was over, and there was talk about Zoo racking up kills with the grenadiers kit.

I think that smoke grenades have unexplored potential as offensive weapons.

When Noraa's squad was attacking that centre flag, our problem was finding an approach with cover. Imagine that situation again, before we ran arond the whole map to get the approach(kudos norgs). Zoo fires a couple of smoke grenades, not onto our approach, but into the enemy position. Maybe even before we crossed the river.

The point of the smoke is to block the enemy's vision, where better to put the smoke than right at their feet if they are in a fixed position. They won't be able to see shit, and we give them no indication of our line approach.

In the same vein, when we were defending the centre flag, and they had us suppressed from the hilltops with snipers. Using the grenadier to smoke the enemy position would give us a respite from fire without blinding us, it may also make the enemy move, as well as opening an opportunity to counter attack.

I think I used the grenade launcher smoke once last night.. You are right though. I could have blind dropped smoke onto the fort with Chal's guidance if we'd thought of it at the time.

it was mentioned at one stage during our little hike. I think sponge had the genadier kit early in the march, but when it was sugested he had lost it when we were on that little "isalnd" of trees.

Placement is certainly the key and i think smoke is under used becuase most people think it just gives your appraoch away. (me for one) but i like the idea of getting smoke onto their position. Could have been use full in sunset city a few times last night

I agree it can have uses.

When we were defending the top of fort i popped smoke sao the snipers couldnt see my squad.

And i agree that smoking the fort up prior to an attack is a good idea..we did that when we pushed for it

I'm only strict with the smoke usage in that if its used at the wrong time it gives our exact location away.  If 1 enemy soldier sees us he has to give a compass bearing and the rest of the squad have to find out where he's talking about...gives us approx 5 seconds to do what we do.

If we pop smoke the same enemy soldier just says "full squad in smoke" and everyone knows where we are in 1-2 seconds.

Thats my concern - dont use smoke to cross roads unless theres an MG covering it as an example

But good points Bageled and the Uber squad did just as you recommended, those squad 3 guys were mating with rocks I think.  Just kidding, unless I was a part of your squad I'll keep my mouth shut..I 'm sure you guys killed a couple of bad guys here and there..we had Zoo the Destroyer, with us...we were sure to get more kills and a higher score Cheesy

Grenades are hard to spot in the air though, so if you can get a smoke grenade amongst the enemy they wont know what's going on. Or you could use it as a distraction, throw it at a crossing in a different direction to draw their attention.

Yeh i agree, i remember in one game of pr, the squad i was in threw smokes onto a road to make it look like we were crossing. We took cover in the forests, and when the enemy squad came through the smoke, we ambushed them. It worked really well, and is a good distraction\ambushing tactic.

I'm getting good with the GL, starting to understand its range finder better. The smoke grenades from it deploy hella fast, a very useful tool on those maps like the one we played last.

i was once told that all grenades have a defensive and offensive purpose, and i was surprised when this was explained to me just how hey are deployed in real life.
offensive deployment is apparently not really aout killing the enemy, its about suppressing the enemy or forcing him out of position, defensive deployment is just the opposite, and is all about killing the enemy and stopping him closing to assault. i can see how these elements can be transferred to PR.

We never ended up using the grenade launcher much in matches.. Every time we try using it we get very sub-standard results. It works fine in the Pubs and pracs, but the moment the counter gets to 0 to start a match, we seem to lose the ability to use it effectively.

Chal is ex-infantry so alot of our tactics have been developed based on real world tactics, then modified so they work better with the game dynamics.

Keep any tactical ideas you've got coming. The more people providing input the more angles a problem gets thought of from and the better the chance of a really good strategy being developed.
