Ok so i smashed my laptop with my huge arse and the whole thing bent like a banana... i removed the hdd inside the laptop and bought an external usb hd case for it to recover the data and put it on the desktop and later on format the hdd and use it as storage. The hard drive is physically undamaged (visually)and doesn't make any out of the ordinary sounds.

My desktop does know its their but i cannot initialize it from disk management and doesn't give stats on hd capacity, free space or anything. Ive tried using Western Digital software to get into it to but the program doesn't even detect it and recovery programs i usually use wont detect it either i'm basically FUCKED and I've lost 3 months of photos of my 6 month old boy....

If anyone has any suggestions on getting the data off it I'm all eyes... Cheers

i would be checking with another hdd if the caddy you got actually works..
if it does then do you have it connected at boot? sometimes you can see the HDD from the bois (even if it is connected via usb) depending on bois version etc.

Things I have done with some success;
-Put the HDD in the freezer for a few hours. Then connect it and see if it works. If it works be quick before it gets warm again.
- use Testdisk
- send it off to payam in BNE to recover (last time we used them it was $700 to recover the whole drive and took a week)

I have had mixed results with testdisk, neat app and I like the nostalgic look at dos. But overall, a lot of my work I just send to Payam as we cant be fucked do data recovery at work and its less risk/reward getting some one else to do it.

$700 isn't that much for a disk recovery. Last I heard I'm sure it was at least double that. I mean $700 is a lot, but easily worth it for recovering priceless files.

It shows in bios but i still cant access it in windows, it sort of appears then disappears in disk management and it refuses to initialize or show any stats on the drive...

The bios sees the caddy but not the hard drive its got me head fucked

I would use testdisk if you can kinda see it. But be precise. If not, and its critical info, stop fucking with it as you will be making it worse and send it off to be recovered.

I have successfully recovered a dead drive in the past by replacing the controller board.

Try looking here for a compatible board:
http://www.hdd-parts.com/

I dealt with these guys before. I couldn't find my HDD on the site but I sent them an email and they found one for me. It cost like $45 all up including shipping but it got the drive going.

That's a neat trick, its probably corrupt data as the laptop was on when i turned it into a banana pancake. Ill take it to someone to have a look that knows what they are dealing with as i have the patience of a 2 year old and ill just end up taking a sledgehammer to it Kiss
