So I've been looking around and thinking of building a new PC, and I thought it would be a good idea to post what I'm currently looking at so all you bastards can tell me just how stupid I am.  Cheesy

If I were you and this were my hard budget, I would try and do what I could to lower the cost of everything else and squeeze a 780 Ti in to the build which will improve the performance (for gaming) overall.

Assuming the machine is for gaming, I'd drop the unlocked (K) cpu and downgrade to a decent quad core i5. I'd settle back to 8gb RAM and drop the PSU a tick (850W is overkill, you could probably get away with 650 with room to spare, given nVidia recommend 600W minimum system power for the Ti). Get a cheaper case if you can and then make the jump to the 780Ti.

If you're doing serious (final year of study or for money) film editing, 3d modelling/animation and/or CAD work as well as gaming then stick with what you've got. Only thing to change is to dump the K version of the CPU. Unless you're getting a good cooler and plan to do some serious OC just save the $50.

SSD's are amazing and only getting cheaper. Unfortunately, game developers are now going overboard on uncompressed audio. Consider 50GB to be the norm for a AAA title from now on (and be happy when it falls under that.) Your SSD will realistically only end up holding 4 games and juggling that shit around is a pain in the arse. If you don't have the budget for a 512GB-1TB SSD (which is totally understandable as that shits expensive) go for a huge self-managing hybrid drive. This way the OS + common programs + game files that your game uses all the time will be on flash, and the rest of your crap can sit on cheap magnetic and you realistically won't notice the difference.

Not doing any film editing or anything, but I want to stream (if that's even possible on shitty NZ net), and a few tests on my current i5 found it to be sorely lacking for most things.

As for the SSD, I'm getting it primarily for Windows + a game or two (I'll pretty okay waiting for games to load as-is), for the most part having it to improve overall speed, especially on bootup and such. As for the Ti, what are the comparisons for it? Looking at the specs between the 780 and the 780Ti I didn't notice too much of a difference... As for the PSU, I only ever put it that high as it'd be nice not having to swap it out if I were to upgrade to SLI down the line.

All fair points, though.

Ti vs 780

i5 @ Xghz will be about 17% faster than i5@Xghtz from 2 years ago.

Your graphics card can hardware encode to h.264 so as long as everything is set up correctly your CPU is doing jack when it comes to streaming. Video streaming iss all about the upstream speed and reliability of your internet connection

harry you have some good points but your forgetting the overkill factor that gamer's have to put in Kiss

tbh it looks like a decent build and say go for the ti if you can strech it. power supply better to have to much then not enough is my reasoning.
HDD's you can get more down the road if needed i would not stress much about them and def get the SSD.

going between an i5 or an i7; depends on if you care enough about the difference between the 2, one has Hyper threading the other doesn't, that is the nuts and bolts of it. An i5 can do everything that an i7 can but the i7 has more "cores" available to do it. that is more beneficial in video encoding etc. gaming wise not much difference between the 2.

As for the case, get the one you like the look of, don't cheap out on it if your going to end up hating the case 6 months down the track. most good cases now have plenty of room to make it as easy as possible to build in and upgrade (this is why i have an obsession with corsair cases).

Haha, yeah I get that, I'm just looking from the angle of how to get the most FPS for his budget. HT is cool but isn't going to help you pump pixels to the screen. For gaming there is no reason to upgrade your CPU in to "overkill" territory before you hit the absolute limits of GPU overkill Kiss

My argument is that unless you've got dual titan blacks you're better off putting more money into video card horsepower (or saving the money) than making the jump to an i7, or a top binned cpu (a few hundred mhz isn't going to be noticeable.)

I am gonna be honest a 780 standard will last a long time. These 780's are more for multi monitor gaming I find. Since I game on a standard monitor ive always been hitting 60FPS on any game with the highest settings on a i7 2600k 4.4ghz.

780Ti FTW!!!!!  I'm getting ^100FPS in BF4 ULTRA settings, on an otherwise 3YO machine (2600K OC @ 4.6Ghz, 8gb 1866MHz ram, SSD) With my previous 2x HD6950 crossfire, I was getting under 50 on LOW.

And with 144hz monitors, they AINT all the same. Have a read here to see what I mean. http://www.blurbusters.com/ I'm waiting to see if G-sync out-does Lightboost, but who knows. Choose carefully.
