I know, another "I hate origin" topic, but this one is a little different from the norm.

I want to reinstall a game called Bulletstorm which I bought on origin a while ago. Simply put, it's not working. The reason it seems to not be working is because for some bizarre reason it is downloading its installer to Origins final game installation directory on C: instead of to my nominated installer downloaded folder on my secondary drive. Why is this bad? Because the folder it downloads the installer to is called "Bulletstorm Limited Edition". When I click install, it creates a folder called "Bulletstorm Limited Edition" in the same goddamn directory. Windows freaks right the fuck out and appends a space to the end of the folder in desperation.

So here is what I end up with: Two empty "nonexistent" folders in C:/Program Files (x86)/Origin Games. One called "Bulletstorm Limited Edition" and one called "Bulletstorm Limited Edition ". They are both empty and taking up 0KB of space, but using up 8.6GB of my hard drive nonetheless. There is nothing in my origin downloads directory and a thoroughly confused file system. The only way to delete these folders is with an elevated cmd dir /x and rd the shortened folder name.

Its just sad that even though I have already paid for the game, I'll probably have to download and play a pirate version.

TL;DR Some complete retard who did a recent origin update set bulletstorm to download to its install directory, not its download directory.

That's really weird. Windows doesn't normally let you make a directory with whitespace at start/end as it trims the filename before creation.

I wonder if you could have accessed the folders from command line, using cd bullet~1 and cd bullet~2

Can't help make origin not shit, but this reminded me of a couple of past experiences which I will now relate for your viewing pleasure.

-naming a directory CON will cause windows to shit itself, it won't be able to enter or delete the directory. This is because CON was the name of the screen or keyboard back in the days of DOS (short for 'console')
It's still valid in modern Windows versions.
copy con 1.txt
will let you type whatever you want, when you press CTRL+Z it will save the file, into 1.txt
It was a great quick n dirty way of writing a batch file back in the day.
Win 7 doesn't seem to let you name a directory CON any more.

-When Sierra brought out their 'sierra utilities' to automatically patch their games (back in the days of dialup, before Steam was around) it REQUIRED that all Sierra games were installed into a SIERRA directory. Before this the installers defaulted to a SIERRA directory but it wasn't a requirement.
So if you installed a few earlier sierra games into this directory (that Sierra Utilities didn't know about) but later decided to uninstall Sierra Utilities, it would wipe out the entire SIERRA directory and all its contents.

The demo for Caesar 3 did this to me as it was the only game at the time that used Sierra Utilities. When I uninstalled the demo it cleaned out every sierra game I had, particularly my Lords of the Realm 2  and all its saves.

-Myth 2: Soulblighter uninstaller had a bug that would delete the parent directory of wherever the game was installed to. So if you installed it to c:\games\myth2 it would trash c:\games when you uninstalled it.

If you installed it to c:\myth2 I hope you have your windows CD/floppies handy.
I didn't get stung by this one but I remember reading it in PCPP because it was a big deal at the time

Welp that's my post thanks for reading.

Harry, you sure all your game files aren't living in C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Local\VirtualStore\Program Files (x86)\<program> ?

You wouldn't be able to see them in Explorer cos EXPLORER DON'T PLAY THAT GAME! But other legacy applications don't know the difference between virtual store and the file path.

A good thought, but no they're not there. Donut was on the money with checking BULLET~1 for the files, they would have been in there but I deleted that directory as the whole install process for bulletstorm through origin is completely borked at the moment anyway.

Yeah I would have thought that if UAC virtualization had redirected the files to your profile, it wouldn't have made the folders in program files\origin games (unless the origin games folder had some REALLY funky NTFS permissions or something else went completely haywire)

Chances are you're going to give up on trying to bring back the game. Haven't played BF3 for a while now because of Origin's shit
