Hi All,
So Im Doing An Assignment For Uni And Have Gotten To A (Bonus) Question That Has Got Me Stumped...
Its Just A Bonus Question So Its Not THAT Important, And Its Due Tomorrow(24/08/12) At Noon, So Dont Worry If Its Too Late.
Im Not Asking For A Direct Answer, Just Some Help To Point Me In The Right Direction:

A Major Rail Bridge Carrying A Very Fast Train Must Be Designed To Pass Floods So That There Is Only A 10% Chance That The Bridge Will Be Damaged By The Floods During Its 50 Year Design Life.
Suppose The Annual Maxium Flood Follows A Log-Normal Distribution With Mean 500m^3/s And Standard Deviation Of 300m^3/s.
a) Calculate The Average Recurrence Inteval Of The Annual Flood.

Any Help Would Be Appreciated :-D

Annual = once a year
interval is 365 days
or don't quote me on this
interval = years on record/instance
you have goal of 10% chance of damage or 0.1 * 50 = 5 instance
50 years / 5  = 10 i.e. damaging flood may occur 1 in 10 years
Interval = 50/5 = 10
I think the volumes are a trick and you can calculate the volume to resist from the 10 year interval and mean and sd
but long time since I did stats and was not very good
might all be crap though
good luck

b) Will BiiGMacK be able to fly his helicopter through it when it's built?
c) How many LRM volleys will Hells and Damit need to fire to take the bridge out
d) Will Jazzy in her Jenna get tripped attempting to cross?

Any Help Would Be Appreciated :-D
