I remember reading a statistic somewhere that the taxes they pull in from smokes is actually more than the cost to public health from smoking related illness.

Here we are

Quote
Net health care costs borne by government (costs that net out
the saving that arise because smokers die early) were $880 million in 1998-99 or about $1054
million in 2004-05 dollars (Collins and Lapsley, 2002). Public health sector costs are
therefore much smaller than the tax benefits accruing to the community from cigarette taxes
which in 2005-06 amounted to $5.3 billion (Commonwealth of Australia, 2007).

http://www.ecosoc.org.au/files/File/TAS/ACE07/presentations%20(pdf)/Clarke.pdf

The whole thing with this is; if you make smokes illegal why don't you make alcohol illegal too as its probably just as bad for you and incurs higher healthcare costs anyway (not just from cirrhosis and related disease but fucktards that get drunk and get in punch ups; drink driving crashes etc). While you're at it ban salt, sugar and fat from our food.

As stated above I'm against any of these things being banned because I don't want a nanny state; if you choose to risk your health for the sake of some short lived enjoyment then that should be your choice. I like to eat shitty food and drink beer and if I have a heart attack at 40 then I've just reaped what I sowed, as I should be allowed to do.

The article I linked actually makes a good point, that people with poor habits are less of a burden on health care because they die earlier; the big costs to public health are in keeping the elderly alive long past their use by date.

Also whoever said earlier about 'who cares if there's a black market': look up the american war on drugs and see how ineffective that has been and what a total waste of taxpayer's money. It will chew police resources that could be better used elsewhere, yet the product will still be readily available.

It wont do shit, Marijuana is also illegal and we all know that stuff is nowhere to be found by youths. Like Donut said earlier, he could get them when he was in grade 9, that would've been illegal but would that have stopped him? No, his choices are what would've stopped him, not a law

I have no issue with this. It will only affect people who currently don't smoke.
Why should tax payers foot the health bills for people who smoke knowing its effects?.

Common misconception.  The aggregated costs to the taxpayer from smoking - medical bills, providing cigarette receptacles in public areas, etc. ad nauseum - is a small fraction of the tax revenue extracted from cigarette sales.  These days well over 60% of the purchase price of cigarettes in Australia goes to the government.  For a pack-a-day smoker paying >$20 for a packet, that's over $4,000 per year he pays in tax on his cigarettes alone.

A while back the leader of the most activist anti-smoking group in New Zealand was ranting on a current affairs program about the cost of smoking.  The interviewer was the first person I've ever seen on TV who had the balls to stop her in mid rant and point out that the medical costs she was quoting were for treating ALL forms of cancer, not just smoking-related ones.

There's a lot of bad shit said about smoking, and I'll back you up to the hilt on much of it... right after I finish this cigarette.

What about all the children who get exposed to it because of moron parents smoking, i also get fucked right off when walking into the shopping centre through a cloud of smoke because arseholes smoke right out the front.

These things piss me off too.  I smoke, but not around my kids, or anywhere my kids are going to be - like the car.  And I don't stand in the way of other people and force my smoke on them.

Fuck you smokers stop breathing in my precious air.

Petrol and diesel fumes are far more prevalent, and cause remarkable amounts of problems.  When I was younger I rode a bike everywhere, and was constantly breathing in the fumes from motor vehicles.  It's not a lot of fun, believe me.

So... Fuck you car drivers, stop polluting my air.

I read a few pages of the government report Donut posted and for the period they were discussing, smoking related illness cost about 1 billion dollars, while the taxes imposed on cigarette sales collected over 5 billion dollars.

Dear Readers,

Fuck you, I'll smoke if I friggin want to and masturbate to pics of your sister whilst i'm at it as is my right living in a free country.  Furthermore if I choose not to wear pants today, I shant!

In closing i'd like to point out that we "The evil smokers" have been forced outside..in the rain....to sate our habit and generally gravitate towards a butt bin.  If it disturbs you so much, take the extra 15 steps and go around us.  I agree with banning smoking indoors, its disgusting to enter a smoke filled room even as a smoker.

Think of the consequences though people!  No more vagina's puffing on smokes cuz their banned = danger of losing an eye from an errant ping pong ball...I rest my case

p.s. Fuck it, ban the bastards and make it difficult to get..might help me fuckin quit again and stay off em this time.....people like Kylie "like to smoke"..why?  even they have no friggin idea, so it may help people like her quit too.  Its the "right to choose" though that has my back up, sick of smokers?  Stay the fuck away from em... and as Monk said, car fumes are a hell of a lot more polluting than 2nd hand smoke from 5 feet away.
