After the plain packaging, this move was inevitable. I don't smoke, but this pisses me off. People get a lot of pleasure from smoking tobacco and I don't see why the government thinks they can stop them from doing it. Sure it is bad for you, but so is deep fried food and fast cars.

Prohibition is proven not to work. This will just drive it underground. Even as early as year 9 at school I could get cigarettes easily, most of my classmates were smoking.


I haven't smoked since school so I'm not particularly annoyed at this but I'm opposed to a nanny state telling us what individuals can and can't do so I dislike this on that basis.

Fuck that shits me, with more than 100% tax collected during the purchase per packet, How is it my fault as a former smoker that the Government dwindled the taxes they collected, then they bitch about the up keep to medical system.

I don't speak up often on these forums but i agree with Cordz. Smoking kills simple. Sports cars don't kill moron drivers kill. I have had sports cars ever since i've had a licence and they have not degraded my health one little bit.

I choose to live a healthy lifestyle and i want to keep it that way. Don't smoke next to me, Don't smoke near me, Don't smoke at the entrance to every fucking place i visit. For the people taking up smoking now in this day and age do not complain about your health later in life.

For those of you who have given up, very well done i can't imagine it is easy to get off something so addictive.

The reason the government wont make them illegal is because there are still a large majority of smokers and those votes count.

At least you can tax legal things... It does piss me off when you have to walk through a crowd of smoking patients to get into a hospital. Studies have shown that on average it takes statistically significant amount of time more to be ready to leave hospital after surgery if you're a smoker, and I feel that public health shouldn't have to pay for someone who doesn't want to get better.

keeping smoking legal is probably the best way to control any type of drug and to be fair smoking is a drug. any drug that is controlled is far better than it being not

i can see it being much worse like other illegal drugs for they start to cut it down with other more harmful chemicals/products to sell more. this would happen to cigarettes and then things would go out of control. i really don't care about people smoking around me (kinds depends on the person at times). I have plenty of friends that smoke and i know that they know it is not right (mainly for i can out run them when they are skinny/normal sized) but they still do it.

in the end it should be about freedom of choices not being told that there is another thing that is illegal

Just on the comments about cigarettes costing the tax payer health care money. I thought specific taxes have been added to the price of cigarettes to cover that and the advertising campaigns. I almost fell over the other day when I saw the price of a pack these days, it was $40 odd. My last experience of buying cigarettes about 10 years ago was $12.
As for people smoking outside shopping centres, I think we should focus on the real problem in shopping centres, people standing on travelators instead of walking on them. I mean for fuck sake, do they have to block everyone and stand there like fucking mushrooms, just walk. That is what should be banned. A wispy cloud of smoke at the door is nothing, hold your breathe and you're through it easy, or even on a windy day it isn't even a problem. Dickheads on the travelators on the other hand, they can inconvenience you for minutes and there is nothing you can do.
