there's a rumour that the Roman empire once used mirrors to concentrate the suns light on an invading turkish ship which burnt before they could reach any kind of land. some scientist at the time gave them the idea (and used it) because thats what real scientists do Kiss

^ That's the story of Archimedes at the Siege of Syracuse. It was the roman ships attacking the greeks.

Mythbusters did an episode on it and weren't able to make it work.

It IS possible though... look at the mythbusters "ray" they stuffed up their focal point big time (look at the spread of light), they only reached 200 degrees

This test only used under 20 mirrors at 30feet..not 60 odd mirrors like mythbusters and reach over 1000 degree's , mythbusters just fucked their design/science, even though the ship was moving, it wouldn't have moved fast enough to stop this...BUT the ship must've been close to pull it off IF it happened, OR would more mirrors, say 2000 help that?  Smiley
