Hey guys. As some of you may know, I stream sometimes and this takes quite a bit of CPU.
I dont have that much to spare apparently... OBS uses around 20-30% of my CPU while a process called system takes 30-40%...Now as you can probably guess, this isnt ideal.....It seems to only use that much when ive got both of my cameras on, each camera taking around 15% of my cpu on its own...Ive updated my drivers for my graphics, network adapters and my cameras but I still loose. The name of the file is called ntoskrnl....apparently its important and ive looked around on the internet and there isnt much else I can find that could bring it down....My specs are as folllows

Intel Core i5 4440 @ 3.10GHz
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3
Gigabyte Technology Co., Ltd. Z87M-D3H (SOCKET 0)
4095MB NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970 (EVGA)

That should be all you need. Anyone got any suggestions on what I can do to take system down?

So do you have just the one stick of RAM?
8.00GB Single-Channel DDR3

If so buy another one, and stick it in the correct slot and double your memory bandwidth, AND you total memory. Its like win win and memory is near free these days.

That probably wont solve everything however. You need to dig a fair bit deeper. NTOSKRNL is the New Technology Operating System KeRNaL. Its the guts of the system.

What about hard drives - are you using SSD? Having a smaller one and just the operating system and your core apps and games is probably the biggest seat of your pants improvement you can get.

OK, to solve a software problem once you have done the task manager stuff, ditch it and get serious with Sys Internals. Microsoft liked it so much they bought it.

https://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896653.aspx
You want process explorer.

Now you need to be a bit scientific.

Boot PC, lets things settle for a minute, run process explorer and see what "normal" looks like. Should be bugger all CPU use after everything is loaded and waiting for you to do some stuff. If not, sort by CPU use and see which suckers are using it by expanding down. Not uncommon for anti virus to fight and keep rescanning - particulary if you have two or more. Post screen shot proc Exp if needed.

Then run one peice of your software, see what that looks like.
Close that and run the other priece. So what that looks like.

Is it only drawing big CPU resources with both running? You need to look for patterns like that. They we can dig down into what actually is bogging things down. Im not familar with your software but start that and grab some screen shots. Some fixes can be super easy, some near impossible :/

Dont forgot to update little things like Java, Flash, IE.

Have you even checked for malware / spayware...
When you say how much of you cpu, for example mine right now is only @ 6%
Has, Dual Core / Hyper threading been disabled in your bios....

I recently came across a known fault with network cards upload, a correct driver fixed the issue

There are so many answers but so little information... I'll be on later if you wanna achat

This is what I posted on some a forum...The guy who is moderating it is a genius so he should be able to help but for what its worth this is it...

Hey guys! I am also suffering with the high system CPU usage. Now im not too sure if my issue is to be expected because my system process is running at 30% ish...I stream games from time to time and ive noticed that my system processor is taking up a fair bit of CPU, making my games lag and stuff.
I did some experimenting and found that as soon as I turned on my two logitech Pro C920 webcams the system process goes from not much to the 30%. It dosnt really discriminate how many cameras i put on because it stays just below 30% cpu usage.
Ive updated (or so i think) my cameras, graphics card (GTX 970) and my network adapter. This still hasnt fixed my issue.

I downloaded the process explorer and found these as my results. Take note, this screenshot is from when my OBS (streaming software) is previewing with the two cameras running btw.

http://imgur.com/htKvWJD

As soon as I turn my preview off on OBS everything goes back to normal....

ps bohica ive done a few anti virus scans and have cleaned it up over night last night
xox

pps Garby....Ive got a 230gb ssd which is holding my OS and bf4 and a couple other games. That was the best move ive ever made in terms of improvement

pppps Garby, idling my computer gives me 1-10% cpu useage with a couple things open. it seems to only spike up when i activate my OBS preview

dude try nvidia shadow play... i have found (for at lease recording) that its quality to tones better. i know it also has a beta twitch stream feature that can be turned on. i found it to be a hit and miss about 4 months ago.. could of changed by now though.

as for the CPU, from memory i would not think that one would have hyperthreading.

def would recommend getting a second stick of 8Gb ram for dual channel.

As above - worth giving nvidia shadow play a go. It offloads some processing to the video card which might help you out a bit.

2nd stick of ram will help  too. You might be bottlenecking there a bit trying to encode two streams at once.

If you right click the columns and select the IO see what that shows us, Id expect a pretty high IO load. Are you trying to encode two 1080P video cams streams?

Do you have an active virus scanner? Try disabling it and see if the load is less.

As for CPU you have 4 full cores which I would think is plenty for most jobs - again I come back to giving it dual channels of RAM so it can get more work done for you.

Just noticed those cams can do 1080P. Two of those is actually quite a bit of work for the CPU to do the work just to display, and then hard for a game to work around without getting choppy. It is probably loading up the system with USB calls and interrupts.

This is where another solution is to use a dedicated multi video in card like DVR's and security devices - they encode the signal on their hardware (or at least the good ones do) because sending the stream on through a faster interface like the PCIe bus.You might find a lot of these only encode at a much lower resolution than what you want however.

See if that dual channel ram gets you closer to happiness.

Shadowplay is 0/10 would not fuck with again...OBS is far superior in terms of customization. 8Gb should be enough ram for what I need to do. Yes to the 1080p video cameras...I like to be able to see every drop of sweat leaking out of my pours...Ive thought of getting a video card but thats just a little more money and more things to configure...If you really think I should ill do it but ill wait till this other guy from the forums replies and see if he can fix my problem...
Ill be able to get my hands on some more ram pretty easy. maybe that might make things better.
As for the active virus scanner, as far as I know it only runs when i tell it too. tyvm for all the help and advice garby and you other ugly mugs

8gb is enough RAM yes.

If you had 2 sticks of 4gb RAM it uses both in parallel. Double the bandwidth.

One stick, half as slow. So yeah another 8gb stick will potentially double the memory bandwidth for not many bucks. Try to get the same stick of RAM if possible.

As for OBS, have you enabled too much post processing like de-noise, brightness and contrast changes, a bit of 'midday TV' blur to make yourself look soooo dreamy?  Kiss  Each thing you do will add a bit more load.

Yeah I need all the midday TV sfx because im as ugly as an ugly train. No its fine haha, the system process jumping up to 30% for no apparent reason is the issue... I am running a gtx 970 as my main card and I put my 560ti back in too...I can make it my dedicated streaming video card. I just need someone to help me configure it...With your suggestion and bohicas help last night I found this solution....Bohica probably might maybe be on tonight so i can bug him into helping me set it up...good old card it is...Ive also got that other guy from the other forum giving me some pointers as too why the system process is so high. Should be good

what happens if you use just one camera?
Is the load way less than half?

It starts off as half with one camera but slowly creeps up to 30%
