I've seen a few guys with degrees in IT who don't know their arsehole from their elbow. Nothing beats hard experience.

I whole heartedly agree with this.

So true, i started my job in IT 3 months ago and I had a whole bunch of certs from TAFE and when i started I knew fuck all in comparison to what I learnt.

Ive learnt more in the last 3 months than I did over the entire 4 years i spent at TAFE.

I might have a Sys Admin junior sort of role coming up in a month or 3. Im sure the pay will be average at best however Kiss  Mainly Microsoft shop but with some Red Hat, all on VMware. For the right sort of person it will be an awesome learning experience. Lots of stuff to learn like bluecoat network proxySG and acceleration, cisco routing switching and VoIP.

Not just yet. Sorta have pre-approval but need to go to the stage.

I guess its a typical sysadmin role really. You will be called upon to do just about anything Smiley  From un jamming a printer, emptying rubbish, to looking over SAN storage, iSCSI, VMWare, backups, do some purchasing, auditing, security reviewing, maintenance. Jack of all trades master of none.

You would report to me, and Im an arsehole. Thats probably the biggest concern haha. Another two sys admins/operations sorta guys in the BNE office, and spend a lot of time supporting our big PNG business - selling cars, boats, gensets, to little operations in Samoa, American Samoa, a little bigger in Fiji. Pretty varied really - which is why I like it.

Again might be a month or two before I can get this officially started.

FUCK, Garby, other then the Actual IT stuff, it sounds just like what i do on a daily basis.. you dont want a proper technical operations admin officer do you, i'd only cost you about 100K a year base wage.

Brisbane. Anglo yeah I spend as much time chasing basics like is the genset working does it have fuel as expanding LUNs on the SAN. We have a small bunch of IT guys in PNG and Fiji but skills are... lower than low Smiley bringing them up to speed is 2 steps forward 1 step back. rewarding and frustrating at the same time.

but 'yota dont make big money by paying high staff salary's - or even having enough staff. Kiss

Sounds like what you were doing already Fez, only this time you won't be the only IT guy, lol. Jack of all trades is right though. Lateral honking a must.
