'super' solar flares are on the list of possible causes for any of the 4 mass extintion events that science can't explain. As I understand it, the theory is that if the flare was big enough, the radiation produced would be enough to overwhelm the earths magnetic field and shred the DNA of life in general on whatever part of the planet was in the sunlight at the moment it hit.
