I was looking at this today for my work laptop (it for the most part of the day can be unused) and thought that if people were into this stuff maybe we can create a group or something along those lines

i was thinking of running it on both of my pc mainly when idol or when i am asleep...

i figure alot of the clan have big powerfull pc's that some of us don't turn off and may be something that we could look into doing as a group

We should figure out if we want to seti or fold though. Get everyone that wants to contribute into the same search on the same team.

Perhaps a vote for people who will actually install and run one of the programs to see which we go with?

I'll be happy to chuck one on my work computer. Can't afford to run it at home, computer costs a fortune to keep on when I'm not using it.

I've read about an application before that used human input to calculate the most stable way for a protein to be folded which worked much better than bruit forcing the calculations with a computer. Really interesting stuff. If memory serves, they figured out how to fold the protein in the HIV virus in this way.

I saw something similar last night to map brain neurons in an MRI scan as a competition between Reddit, Facebook and G+.

i have setup a group for seti@Home called =]DI[=

after you install the boinc app and restart it will ask what project to use. when you select seti it will get you to set up an account and then launches there site to add a group

It's useless as a currency, but its great as a commodity if you want to make quick cash because it spikes so severely - as long as you sell at the right time. You'd be crazy to invest in it long term though.

I'm worried for people who are selling things with real world value using Bitcoins. If they don't offload all their cryptocurrency soon, they'll be shit out of luck. That's the problem with a currency where there isn't anyone actually backing it, there isn't anyone to take responsibility for it.

It's also getting harder to do the mining for the bitcoins.... Super expensive now...

as for bit coin, it is a great idea but yeah i don’t actually know of anyone that actually had mined anything worth while and uses it.

You guys need to research more into Bitcoin. It has no one backing it???? You are joking. There have been some major investments by companies and individuals into the development of Bitcoin as a currency / asset.

Yes it is very volatile. So be warned and yes it may fall in a heap tomorrow but I think the benefits of Bitcoin or another form of Crypto currency outweigh the negatives.

You guys obviously enjoy major government regulation.

FYI Bitcoin is very hard to mine however you can mine other crypto currencies and trade them for Bitcoin.

I read that bitcoin mining is no longer viable and the cost of the hardware outweighs the returns. Group or not, you're still not going to make a profit. You might be able to cover electricity costs and perhaps replace hardware as it wears out. As coins get mined, the mining required to get a coin goes up exponentially.

After seeing the major bitcoin exchanges (eg mt gox) getting hacked repeatedly and both companies and individuals losing significant amounts of bitcoin - with nobody accepting liability - at least a modicum of regulation doesn't seem so bad.

Also now that the FBI has taken down the Silk Road I expect there will be some form of government regulation/interference in the future, whether overt or otherwise.

The difficulty of bitcoin has gotten to the point of its not even worth mining anymore. Better off doing some other cryptocurrency instead like god forbid Dogecoin which actually has a strong following.
