The octopus, with it's groping arms, represents Inwalda's Oepedian complex for his sister, and is conspicous in it's absence, an absence which represents Inwaldas denial of his incestuous thoughts.

Clearly its referring to greek mythology in that the plane represents man and his achievments, the shark is mans pride in his achievments and his ultimate downfall and of course the Kraken..Octopus is the punishment bestowed upon man for having too much pride and turning away from god/Zeus.

Now if it was a giant crab..then that would clearly be referring to Inwalda's sister etc..
