Title: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 02/04/2010, 05:10 PM I was thinking it might be a good idea if we had a thread where we recommend to each other obscure games - old or new - that we'd likely not hear of ourselves.
My recommendations: Nexus: The Jupiter Incident (tactical space strategy/combat) Master Of Magic (think Civilization + Heroes Of Might & Magic) Evil Genius (we've all wanted to rule/destroy the world at some point, right?) Heroes Of Might & Magic 3 (science-fantasy turn-based strategy game) Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Chalice on 02/04/2010, 07:38 PM Age of mythology - similiar to Heroes of might & magic 3..but better imo
X3 series Jagged alliance 2...no 3 is coming out soon UFO extraterrestrials Gold ...out on steam, like the old UFO and Xcom series but with updated graphics..is Awesome 5 stars Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 02/04/2010, 07:42 PM Did you manage to get into X3 Chal? I've tried a few times. It's a beautiful game and I love the idea of the size and free range. There's just such a huge learning curve I keep losing steam after reading the manual for half an hour every hour of playing.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 02/04/2010, 07:43 PM Age of mythology - similiar to Heroes of might & magic 3..but better imo Age Of Mythology is NOT like Heroes of Might and Magic. Age Of Mythology is not that obscure either. It's Ensemble Studios - perhaps one of the most well known RTS makers. But I'll keep an eye out for the others. Yeah Zoo..i've had 30 odd stations..al linked to form 3 super stations in 3 different sectors, all suppliying the others in a loop that produced expensive goods..was awesome...had 3 or 4 of the biggest ships and a horde of smaller ones..kicked arse and still one of my fave games ever..just..so...BIG., and takes a while to get your income going. Tip : just buy 10 odd traders (start with 2 though) get them all to be universal traders and give em the jump thingy..let them do their thing, just keep an eye on em..they need a nudge every now and then...and before you know it you can buy your 1st station, just make sure you have a goal in mind for what you want your ultimate end product to be and build your stations with that in mind..link em up and your RICH, buy a kick arse ship, fuck some pirates up and rule the universe with an iron fist. Gonna go reinstall it now...got the bug again :) p.s. Kaotic - you're right about Age of Mythology..got my games mixed up, it IS a good game..but its nothing like HOMM..there's another game out there though thats EXACTLY like HOMM3 or 5..thought it was AOM..my bad :) Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 03/04/2010, 10:16 AM Any tips for the very beginning Chal?
So far I haven't even gotten to the stage of buying a new ship... Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: SolidSmiddi on 03/04/2010, 09:40 PM Shadow Warrior
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Chalice on 04/04/2010, 07:38 AM Any tips for the very beginning Chal? So far I haven't even gotten to the stage of buying a new ship... Here's a sector map http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=116035 Here is a list of the locations of all the free ships..so just go there, find the ships and sell them (keep the mamba raider and use it..its good)..now you should have enough cash to get some ships and kit them all out, I personally just traded off the solar plants to the east of the 1st sector and grew my cash till I had enough..but this is a great shortcut for you. Note: The X,Y,Z positions and match them up and you'll find the ships...some of them are wwaaaayyy out there. http://www.farbadger.co.uk/x3/free_ships.html Finally here's a good guide on how to set up your universal traders http://forum.egosoft.com/viewtopic.php?t=121043 Hope that helps :) Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 04/04/2010, 04:40 PM How do you claim the ships or whatever?
Where do you recommend trading the solar cells to in the first sector? Also do you play X3 Reunion or X3 Terran Conflict? Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Chalice on 04/04/2010, 05:41 PM Both...X3 reunion is what i've given you..most of the free ship[s are in X3 TC.
To claim a ship...exit your ship in your spacesuit, get within 20 mtrs of the empty ship and you should see what to do from there. Trading the solar cells - you can buy a piece of equipment that allows you to see the station details without docking..I recommend getting that asap..then grab your solar cells fly back into 1st sector and just click on the stations and you'll see which one will give you the best price...around 17-18 is good and buy them at 14 downwards..as you get bigger ships you can make a ton of cash even off the solar plants buy having a $3 profit per solar cell and selling a couple of hundred thousand of them at once :) Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 04/04/2010, 05:58 PM Which sector is good for solar cells? Sorry I really am new to this game...
I tried to capture an abandoned pirate ship, but crashed into the side of it in my space suit and died instead... Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Chalice on 04/04/2010, 06:07 PM Which sector is good for solar cells? Sorry I really am new to this game... I tried to capture an abandoned pirate ship, but crashed into the side of it in my space suit and died instead... lol..the one straight thru the East gate at the very start...it has 2 solar plants in it, that sector map I put up should list every sector and whats in it..so if those plants wont sell em cheap, print that map out and just check out some of the others nearby. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: DonutKing on 04/04/2010, 06:30 PM I'll say what I always say in these type of threads... System Shock 2
Good picks kaotic, HOMM3 and Master of Magic are awesome games, I actually bought them when they new, and I still bust them out occasionally. Master of Magic is probably one of the best fantasy-style strategy games I've ever played even though its showing its age pretty badly. Age of Wonders series is a good alternqative but its not quite as good. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Chalice on 04/04/2010, 06:57 PM THATS IT..Age of Wonders..thank you :)
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 09/04/2010, 07:58 PM X3 is intriguing me.. if I were to get it, should I get Reunion or Terran Conflict?
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 09/04/2010, 08:40 PM Be warned that X3 is a hugely daunting game with a massive learning curve.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 09/04/2010, 09:16 PM Noted.
It seems to be somewhat of a freelancer-on-steroids. But the learning curve can't be too difficult, right? I mean I could manage most baseless levels on C&C: RA when I was about 8.. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 09/04/2010, 09:23 PM It's like a hardcore version of Freelancer. Kinda like the PR of Space Exploration games.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: cowcar on 10/04/2010, 05:45 AM Mount & Blade
and as a bonus, they have just released a new version with multiplayer... Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 10/04/2010, 11:25 AM Mount & Blade and as a bonus, they have just released a new version with multiplayer... Second that. Also suggest a VERY obscure game I bet NONE of you have heard of.. The Neverhood. It's a claymation puzzle-game where you wander "the Neverhood" and try to save it. I highly recommend The Neverhood. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: DonutKing on 10/04/2010, 11:28 AM I've heard of it and I even played a demo of it many years ago :) I think it was on a PCPP cover CD.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 10/04/2010, 11:33 AM Donut you LEGEND! +1 for at least having played a demo.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: mandatory05 on 10/04/2010, 11:39 AM monkey island... the one on PS2, i spent nearly 50 hours when i was about 8-9 finishing the game.
probably the most hours ive ever spent on a game (bar PR and ARMA). Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 10/04/2010, 11:42 AM Was it 3D?
I expect it was.. Escape From Monkey Island? Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: mandatory05 on 10/04/2010, 11:51 AM yes it was escape from monkey island. very fun game,
i also recommend heroes of might and magic 3 or 5, extremely fun games. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 10/04/2010, 11:55 AM The earlier Monkey Island games are far better imo. It didn't seem to transition well to the GrimE engine.. Lucasarts should have stuck with SCUMM.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 20/04/2010, 02:53 PM I just played some more Master Of Magic and remembered one of my favourite strats.. a legion of UNDEAD TROLLS.
Trolls regenerate, so any troops surviving a battle end it with full health. Undead troops resurrect themselves with full health at the end of combat providing you're victorious. Simply put - it's impossible to slowly drain this army as each battle they win, they effectively win without casualties. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: DonutKing on 20/04/2010, 03:12 PM Yep, black channels and trolls were pretty game breaking. There are a shitload of strats like this that could totally cheese the game. A couple of warships with flight and invisibility were unbeatable, the AI didn't know how to deal with them. You could also put all your picks in death magic and start summoning Shadow Demons or Wraiths on the first turn, if you were quick enough a single one of these units could take on enitre enemy armies.
Have a read of this site, particularly the FAQ http://www.dragonsword.com/ Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 20/04/2010, 03:15 PM Yep, black channels and trolls were pretty game breaking. Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Z00111111 on 20/04/2010, 04:30 PM Garry's Mod is a great game I'm getting back into. It's a total sandbox game, you just build whatever crap you want. Two pretty much required addons are Wiremod and PHX3. PHX3 for the parts for building, Wiremod so you can make robots and complex contraptions.
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: DonutKing on 21/04/2010, 08:27 AM Funny that Master of Magic was mentioned yesterday because gog.com is releasing it soon. They have just released Master of Orion 1&2 (http://www.gog.com/en/gamecard/master_of_orion_1_2) which was made by the same company, and is a similiar game except its in space. It's an excellent game, well worth checking out.
Also Blood plus all the expansions are getting released there too.... its basically a very similiar game to Duke Nukem 3d, full of Evil Dead/Army of Darkness references without being a blatant ripoff of Ash like duke was :) Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Ametros on 19/06/2010, 06:03 PM X3:TC and all I can manage is to get lost in a sector and be unable to find the north gate which I wish to pass through..

What combo got you 5,000,000? Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Sillen on 20/06/2010, 10:05 AM Patrician3, Europa Universalis3
Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: inwalda on 21/06/2010, 09:03 PM this game just had to get a mention- Moonbase Commander
Its a mix of Call of Duty, Age of Empires, Starcraft and World of Warcraft but better in every aspect Title: Re: Obscure Recommended Games Post by: Jstar on 22/06/2010, 04:29 PM Except its nothing like that
