Title: New router with better capabilities request Post by: Syklone on 20/09/2013, 01:08 PM Team,
Am looking to get a new adsl modem router combo but am unsure whats great now days (being a stay at home dad I have lost touch) I do know I would like to have (if possible) a device with; - simple to use web interface - 24 hour logging of websites visited - so I can review whats being banged on and block for my kids. - blocking websites to specific MAC addresses. My boys have iPads and would like to block youtube going to their ipads for 23hrs a day. The above is my main request, but am unsure without going and buying a line of cisco products to do the job. That or I wait for Conroy to implement his internet filter to save my children cause its not my responsibility anymore. Regards Syks. So far very happy with it... it defenitly has parental controls that come free with the router. http://www.netgear.com/lpc **has time-of-day filtering and per-user filtering its got QoS for gaming and streaming and it dual band which is awesome. not sure about website logging but with 50+ categories to control it might work for you :P http://www.netgear.com.au/home/products/wirelessrouters/high-performance/WNDR4000.aspx# Title: Re: New router with better capabilities request Post by: CordlezToaster on 20/09/2013, 02:01 PM I use a fritzbox.
But if bohica jumps in on this thread he will bag the crap out of it. But would prefer no Linux box or any other extra boxes round this place. Am trying to cut it all down to the tablet shit I have in this place, and just my PC (Thanks to Bohica)
Wife would go nuts if I started added more shit or leaving PCs on etc. Title: Re: New router with better capabilities request Post by: kesawi on 03/10/2013, 08:19 AM I'm running a Netgear NDR3800 wireless router which uses OpenDNS (http://www.opendns.com/) for parental filtering. While the router is not the most configurable the parental controls work for me. It filters all devices by default without needing to configure anything other than the router. You can assign individual user profiles which are accessible through a small software utility installed on PCs only (tablets and other devices use the default profile). You can also assign different time based filter profiles.
It blocks the majority of content, but there are a few things it won't block. If you do a Google image or video search then it will display the results of whatever google brings up (for example do an image or video search for porn and Google will show explicit results including images). This can be corrected by using Google Safe Search. The filter can easily be bypassed by chaning the DNS server settings on a device. My kids aren't at the point where they are knowledgeable enough to be able to circumvent the filter, but by the time they are, they will be old enough that it isn't as critical and I will need to rely on my parenting skills rather than a filter anyway. |
