I hear the Remington 700 Series are a quality line of rifle. Snipers used them in the Vietnam War.

I've already shot an air rifle before there not exactly what i'm looking for, i'm looking for something that i could go hunting for game with. but thanks anyway.

And brand of .22 rifle would you recommend budh.

winchester wildcat hands down. Light, short and good for shooting out windows. Its only in .22lr but still effective beyond 100m and dirt cheap on ammo. Poverty pack of 500 rounds is like $30 and they are decent rounds.

Get the biggest, most expensive gun you can, OP. Bigger and more expensive always means better.

to be completely honest Skull, while the .22lr are good enough, if you can, go up to the .17hmr, its a much better calibre, you'll find you'll be using it long after you graduate to a larger calibre rifle, the .17hmr is just a necked 22mag, so packs a whallop, has a nice flat trajectory and keeps tight groups, on the range you should expect sub MOA, and in the field you should expect single round COM lethality of small game, you have 3 main rifle manufacturers for this round.

http://www.marlinfirearms.com/firearms/17hmrmagnum/917vs.asp
http://www.savagearms.com/firearms/model/93R17BVSS
having handled a marlin only recently, It would get my vote, it's the most versatile and accurate, as well as being reasonably inexpensive even in Australia.
Or you could go with either of the following but these are both top of the range premium rifles, all are considered as elite, top tier rifles but you pay for it. might not be what your looking for. but everything i have heard puts them at the top of the price no object list. mind you the anny is considered beyond reproach, and well worth the hash.

Agreed, i have a .17hmr i would recommend that over a .22lr just because it shits on the .22lr by far and is more comparable to a .22mag. Considering your a noob and you dont have any income to my knowledge .22lr is perfect and the most popular cartridge in the world and ammo is abundant and cheap (you can always upgrade to a larger cartridge in the future)

I buy this from my local shady dealer once a year... example of prices and what i use the caliber's for...

1000 rounds of .22lr $89  (40gr solid lead) Plinking gun and occasional bunny gun
500 rounds of .17hmr $238  (17gr polly tips) Bunny and Fox
500 rounds of .223rem $454.80 (50gr soft points) Fox, dogs and the odd bunny
400 rounds of .308w $562  (180/150gr soft points) Deer, pig and dogs
400 rounds of .308w $420  (150gr fmj's)

I dont have any larger cartridges because i just dont see the need for them.

The Anschuetz brand of rifle are very sweet indeed! Also Sako and Tikka to a point, you do get what you pay for though, he is yet to even fire or learn rifles, the lad has a long way to go :)

Maye if you wanted to drop a Asian Buffalo you will certainly need to go bigger than a .308 :D

skullmuch, just a big FU....in a nice way!

saw your post and thought to myself how i miss being able to go hunting like i did when i was a kid back in South Africa.
Jokingly brought it up with the missus and she went off her rocker (over protected English girl)
OMG i had hours of arguments over the fact that i "want to own a gun and kill innocent animals" ....
OH GOD.

SO  I hate you because your lucky!   if you guys are ever going hunting in Vic, and have an extra spot i would LOVE to go... will even pay you :P

Hahahaa, all I'm reading between the lines in Munchies posts are, bigger is better! Shooting is the easy part I reckon. It gets hard when you have to get your hands dirty with a knife, or discover the kangaroo you just killed has a joey in it's pouch.
Personally I'd listen to Anglo and Budh. Anglo knows his hardware, and it sounds like Budh is an experienced hunter.

Bageled has covered why I'm not sure I'd ever go hunting. I like the idea of stalking prey or getting a long shot, but I know I wouldn't like getting close to a kill.

Title: Re: Recommended guns

I'm with you Zoo. Target shooting I've done, and it's fun. But actually hunting and killing, not for me. The very real possibility that you'll have to pull a joey out of it's dead mothers pouch and finish its young life, no thanks. I'll happily let other people do my dirty work. I'm a city boy, I was in my 20's before I came face to face with a cow that wasn't fresh off the grill.

Yes I have and I am also very new to this new venture of fun! That's why these types of posts are both educational and the guys here who actually have experience in hunting and stalking, Skull and I all ears...  :) The only guns I have used recently were a Tikka T3 lite .223 and a Sako .243, both of these rifles were awesome! Of course bigger is better lol.  8)

Yes a .308 is overkill, much like my 780GTX video card. If you can afford it, buy it I say. I'm sitting on the fence with the Tikka T3 lite Varmit Rifle in .243 and a Leupold Scope, prolly with a synthetic stock or maybe the camo version, only cause I can. As for Skull a mid range .22 with a nice scope will be perfect for him to learn.

We are both super excited about doing this together, much like Budh and Budh Jnr. Lucky for them that they live where they do.

So please keep all the info coming, be it criticism or constructive :D

I hear you there, that .375 H&H is for the fucktards that pay $$$$$ to go and shoot big game. Not want I want to do lol, but I would prefer an RPG to take out one of those bastards lol.

I also want to do target shooting as well as doing culls on a few Sheep and Cattle property's that we are allowed onto. We are only allowed to shoot a certain number and have to account for this. The best of both worlds I guess.   8)

If I found a joey or had to kill an animal that was suffering I would do it with out hesitation. It's all about 1 shot kill, no suffering and move on. Certainly willing to do what needs to be done.

.308 overkill  ??? .308 is not overkill, you cant pierce a sambars shoulder with anything less and drop it straight away without a doubt unless your going for meat then a head shot with a .223 would be fine. Anything over a 300win mag is overkill in this country... Here's a chart of some cartridges available. A .308 is no32 its designed to be a hard hitting mid range cartridge. 30-06 is no49 it has the same projectile as a .308 but has 12mm longer brass to throw it a couple hundred metre's flatter but is slightly less accurate than a .308. I use a .308 because all my hunting happens within 200m i dont require a huge cartridge that will throw a bullet dead flat out to 600m. I dont wanna waste good money and good ammo on shit like that.

Advice for you sammy

Basically do your research on hunting forums find out what people mainly ethically use for certain animals, decide what range you want to shoot them at eg 100m, 500m or 800m metre's cause its the difference between getting a .308/30-06 or a .300/.338win mag, learn the ballistics for these cartridges you wish to buy and what they are meant for eg. "do i really need a super high velocity flat shooting .338 remington ultra mag when i want to shoot rabbits within 100m metre's?" lol (that will be a very expensive rabbit)

And u can never go wrong buy military cartridges they are cheap, effective, abundant, every manufacturer makes weapons to fire them and you can get the ammo anywhere

Go get your self a nice second hand rifle to start, new will prolly chew your budget then you want a scope think $800 for a nice one. but have a think first
Where are you going to shoot, do you have a mate with a farm or some such -
What sort of terrain, what sort of range this means, open country or scrub -scope vs sight, ride or hike heavey barreled vs light
Are you going to hit the range a lot, is there a nice long range outdoor one in easy reach, clay shooting more fun so consider a shotty and sabot rounds for hunting big stuff careful with the chokes though and range limited
Do you want to go bang bang bang or are you going to sure of your shot lever/bolt or single action you could save heaps by going to a single action rifle.
22 has its place but I don't think it will prepare you much for larger rifles like chalk and cheese - Go a .223 if rifle it is you want

When I started shooting with my mates with 22 to 303, shot gun to sks the big issue I had was to keep my eyes open and not tense up on the larger guns, first shot good following ones way off. And it suck to try fixing a car when the other ass holes are plinking targets near by with a 308. Course I cant shoot free hand for shit need a rest except the shot gun. I go hunting this way though

in all honesty anything over 30-06 in this country is overkill and really you only need a 223 to shoot most things here ,we all have a caliber that we like .I would much rather an all round gun than have a .30 cal  (308, 30-06) which is good but your cost of shells will make the difference ,i'm paying $1.20 a shot to buy at the shop and prolly half that to reload.Go talk to your local gun shop owner and quiz him on some stuff. It really comes down to what you want to do with it .........kill or shoot paper and yes bageled i have around 30 years of hunting experience from traps ,guns to dogging pigs its all great fun and good to get out in the bush.

I hear the Remington 700 Series are a quality line of rifle. Snipers used them in the Vietnam War.
Cant tell if thats sarcasm.

Remington make overpriced shit. Only good thing about them is the long list of aftermarket parts available.
Winchester are decent but they're also over priced.
Ruger make some good stuff thats pretty cheap.

Get a Tikka, cheap and accurate. 22 is a good starting point for shooting, especially if you wanna take out some bunnies for food and not spend alot on ammo. 223 or a 243 are also good, accurate, can take out anything from a rabbit to a goat (some use it against pigs but id rather use a 308 for that), ammo is reasonably priced compared to the larger cals, low recoil round.

for 22s CZ make a really good rim fire and they're cheap.

What ever you do though dont get a shit scope. im not saying spend 2k on one but spend a good 500-600 and get some decent glass.

Try different ammo brands, some perform different in different guns. You can have 2 exact same rifles and one might perform better than the other with certain ammo.

Finally look up some videos on how to clean the rifle and get yourself a single piece rod, not one of those 3 piece ones. Dont get boretech cos their rods are terrible, they are way to flexible so the thing you dont want when cleaning is a rod flexing as your putting a patch through.

They still use rem 700's in combat but they are so modified barely any of it is original and yes the standard rem 700 line is absolute shit, the blueing job they do on the guns is utter shit and they rust up quickly (some chinese mob does the barrels now and remington have nothing to do with them) i wouldn't choose anything less than a rem 700 sendero they are ok rifles but bit over priced. Stay away from the SPS models!
