Title: Joysticks
Post by: bageled on 22/03/2013, 07:24 AM
Does anyone use these for flight sims etc? Been trying to fly in PS2 and I've been struggling, I am getting good at bailing out just before I hit the statiionary object, and I even managed to shoot someone down. Happily he didn't know I was behind him, so he was flying straight, and I got right up behind him and unloaded. So, anyway, joysticks, worth getting? Is that even the right word, seems very Atari 2600

YES flying with mouse & keyboard is like playing FPS with a Console controller... it 'works', but it just ain't cricket.

My advice though, if theres a retailer in your area, go & physically see/feel the one you're thinking of getting... they vary wildly in build quality, ergonomics & stability. ( I have biggish hands so most I've tried dont feel right.. so I bought a CyborgX.. fully adjustable.... but flimsy & tips forwards before even defeating its return-to-centre-spring pressure. I had to do some cable-tie modding to half the spring pressure.)

I have a logitech attack 3 USB, seems to work really well and is quite robust (I haven't managed to break it yet)
You can get em for $30 online.

I don't use it that often but yes, trying to fly a plane in battlefield games is much easier with a josystick.

As a kid I wore through about a dozen joysticks playing X Wing, Tie Fighter, Wing Commander etc. I think I played Descent with a joystick as well.

stay away from the SAITEK Cyborg F.L.Y.5 sticks  i had one for a total of maybe 3hours gaming time and the axis broke (got stuck spinning right)
My old logitech was the bees knees and lasted forever...

But isnt the Keyboard the way to go,  apparently how all the pro BF3 pilots fly?

BiigMack was by far our best helicopter pilot in BF3 and he only used the keyboard.

I have a Saitek Cyborg X. Don't buy one, the base isn't stable enough.

I use my xbox 360 controller for all my flight stick needs.

Like Donut, I have a Logitech Attack 3. It's a brilliant basic stick. Nothing fancy. It's got enough buttons for FPS flying. Only downside is no yaw.
