Title: TV Show Recommendations
Post by: sandman_aus on 12/10/2012, 01:20 PM
Hi All,
I'm looking for some new TV series to (totally legitimately purchase :PDT_Armataz_01_14:) but I'm drawing a blank. Already have all the main-streamers (Spartacus, Dexter, Walking dead etc) but list them up anyways.. theres probably one or two myself or others have missed.

Have been watching Hell on Wheels recently which is into its second season. Game of Thrones and Breaking Bad are excellent. Saw an episode of Boardwalk Empire which looked alright and intent to check out a few more.

Modern Family is also pretty good (Am I showing my age if I think Julie Bowen, aka Claire Dunphy, is hot?)

Regular Show

If I didn't already know you were a weirdo, this would confirm it for me... my kids watch this show and it's fucking mindfuck mcfuck.  Same as that "Adventure Time".

Depends on what kind of shows you like, if you're interested in some older stuff... Third Watch, The Thin Blue Line, Heartbeat, Blackadder, Any and All of the Star Trek Series (though the Original Series is the ickyiest of the lot in my opinion)... House is a great series to watch back to back... though it starts to suck in the last couple of seasons.  Dexter is good.

Splints, any reason for the US version of shameless specifically? I thought they pretty much ripped the scripts exactly.

Title: Re: TV Show Recommendations
Post by: Splints on 15/10/2012, 11:11 AM
First season of Shameless US is pretty much a clone of the British one, it's season 2 where it really changes and becomes it's own story.

And who could forget Balky and cousin Larry?

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8vbnLYROCj8

And of course Bageled's favorite show about and old man who meets a young 8 year old girl on the streets and then takes her in to his house  ??? I speak of course about 80's hit "Punky Brewster"

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HzXf1gvfPSM

I enjoy Psych and Burn Notice
Stopped watching Burn Notice after the first few episodes of Season 6. It has just become too repetitive and predictable. Shame as it was a really good show for the first few seasons.

Doesn't suprise me to see legend of the seeker in your list Dex. Personally I couldn't get past the gay parade in the opening minutes of the first episode. Way to much oiled topless pretty man for me, but I figure that is right up your alley.

certainly wouldn't be the first parade of oiled topless men that've found themselves right up Dex's alley...

yes banshee is awesome i love ep 3

Banshee - porn, nudity, drugs and hard core violence intertwined.

Damit - my mind has been thwarted I downloaded it last night, watched eps 1, skipped to 3 and did not realise the human body can break like that in a fight scene (and flinched so hard my arse sucked the bed sheets inside of me) and am now tonight going to do eps 2 and so on.... after I remake the bed with clean sheets.

I watch way to much TV. Shows I have watched recently/am still watching.

- Arrow
- Revolution
(Both are slow in the middle of the first season, but worth sticking it out. Also season 2 for both has just started.)

- Doctor Who (NuWho)
- Metal Hurlant Chronicles
(Both are sci-fi, Dr Who is obvious. MHC is kinda like a new twilight show. Enjoyed both.)

- Archer. (this show is f***ing hilarious.)
- Attack on Titan. (New anime, if your into that. Probably one of the best new Anime's in the last few years.)
- South Park (New season has just started)
- The Following (Season 1 finished a few months ago, was good.)
- White Collar (Funny, classic FBI guy has to partner with his biggest catch (master thief) to solve crimes.)
- Happy Endings (really under rated, kinda like How I Met Your Mother.)
- Blue Mountain State (hilarious show based around an college NFL team, though you never see any NFL played)

Then the usual

- Big Bang
- How I Met Your Mother
- Supernatural
- Breaking Bad
- Game of Thrones
- True Blood
- Walking Dead
- Rules of Engagement
- 2 Broke Girls.

There is probably more but that'll do for now.

Just started watching Daredevil (Marvel TV series) and Knights of Sidonia (anime).

It's a struggle to not marathon them both, and KoS gives me a modern-day Robotech feel as I watch it, so damn good...!! Two season of each out, with the third in the works I believe.

Started watching True Detectives.

This is from S1 E4 I think, a 6 minute cut, fucking awesome film making.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s_HuFuKiq8U

To give it some context the long cut in Children of Men was 7.45min. I would have posted the Children of Men vid, but no one has put the whole thing on Youtube. You should check it out, it's not a great movie story wise, but it is impressive film making.

Title: Re: TV Show Recommendations
Post by: Z00111111 on 07/09/2015, 06:52 AM
I agree with Bageled that Children of Men is well worth watching. It looks really good. They used some interesting filming techniques that really paid off. There's a really good scene in a car.

I find long cuts really good for suspense. I'm not sure if it's because it gives you a solid frame of reference (even if it's moving) to develop immersion, or if it's just something that's so unused that you're anticipating a cut to more information.

I've only heard good things about True Detective. I'll have to watch it when I get a chance. I've enjoyed Woody Harrelson in stuff before, and he has a house on Maui.
