Title: Internet Issues
Post by: Psych0Kyller on 11/04/2012, 09:42 PM
Hey Guys,

Have a question for the more techy/internet guru guys than myself. I have been having issues with my internet connection dc'ing and it is getting increasingly worse. Now I rung IInet about it to get it fixed and the tech I spoke to said the following:

- DSLAM wasnt reporting modulation (which i think he fixed)
- Said i should activate the QoS setting on my router to help with the stability.

Now I currently live 4.5kms away from the exchange so the max speed i will get is about 2.3mb and download speeds of about 250kb/s. Which is fine considering the distance however due to the constant drop outs my line sync keeps fluctuating between the above speed and below 1mb and apprantely the techy doing shit with some settings and me activating the QoS was meant to help but if anything it made it worse.

The router im using is a Netgear DGND3700 and only recently has this issue occured, the internet was fine and stable for the whole last year ive had the connection.

Any help would be appreciated?

Cheers Guys

ps: Is it possible that the phone port is affecting it, if so how would I go about fixing it if there isnt another one in the house?

Do you have any phones or do you just have the router???

You would only have to activate QOS, if you are load balancing the internal network hence you are trying to do multiply internet tasks at once,

There are a couple of things you can try, would it be easy if i was to sent you a test router???

The only thing i have on the phone line is the router, mind you i am paying for a phone number but we dont have a phone hooked up (couldnt get naked dsl apparently) and in regards to the test router if you thinks that easier then yeah OR you could post up options for me to try and i can test it and see what happens?

Can you post your modem stats? ie snr sync speeds etc?.

Also can you plug a phone in and listen for any noise?.

I also think trying a new modem would be worth while.

Tried with my old modem and it made no change.

Plugging a phone in is kind of hard cose i dont have one :P

and for my modem stats, not too sure what exactly you want :P my current sync speeds on the line are 2,401kbps / 519kbps which is normal....for now.

i had a similar issue,  ran like a network packet watcher and it would run fine for ages then just drop
the ISP had to rate limit my connection at like 5meg to stabalise it

just an idea

well the iinet techy i spoke to said he would reduce my connection down to adsl2 instead of adsl2+ in order tog et some stability and the connection speed would only go down to 2mb but half the time it doesnt sit at that which is what annoys me

Pyscho make a note of the dates, your next phone call should be to their sales department and have them adjust what they are charging you for. If you are only recieving adls2, you shouldn't be paying for adls2+. Then speak to their accounts department and tell them that you want a discount on your current bill because of the problems you have been having. They will be authorised to take a certain percentage off if you ask.

If your connection has gone from good to drop outs, and nothing on your end has changed, then it could be the infrastructure. Somewhere between you and the exchange, some system could have reached a fail point or a tech has rerouted through a different cable.

I had similar issues recently with Telstra and it was connected to the weather. All the copper was underground, and when it rained the pits got flooded and connectivity went to shit. Start paying attention to the when you get the drop outs. Does it happen at the same time of day? When it rains? When it's windy? Better yet talk to the linesmen when they come out, these guys work with the cables and will be able to tell you straight up if it is the infrastructure. If it is the infrastructure, consider swapping to cable.

The only leverage you can get on a telco is through a phone service because they are legally obliged to provide you with a good phone service. The legislation that covers the phone service, does not extend to internet service. So get yourself a phone and plug it in, if there is noise on the line, you are in luck. You can complain all day about shit internet, and they will just say "sorry about that, here let me help you out by giving you less for the same money, thank you bye" You ring about a shitty phone line and you have legislation on your side and they have to have to fix that the problem or start paying you money.

Not to sure if its weather related i mean from what i could tell weather was fine yesterday and it dropped out 4 times in the 30mins before the war which was pissing me off.

Also cant switch to cable, its non-existant in Perth its only copper unless your a government building which last time i checked i wasnt :(

umm from my understanding line noise is bad not good, you would want no line noise for a good connection

line noise is what causes drop outs etc

note when we say line noise i am referring to static on the line so you should still get a dial tone etc but it should not have any static to it

i think thats what bageled means because if there is static on the line then they would have to fix it and would also explain the drop outs and then at least i know its not something I did :P

I am hoping that their is static cose then at least they can fix it otherwise ill be like wtf :(

Does your modem have a built in line test an db stat tracking? If you look at that it may help Id the issue.

Also. Do you have more than 1 laptop or pc to confirm the modem isn't doing it. Cause if one drops and the others stay on could be a dud port on the modem.

Food for thought while I wait for my laptop to rebuild here at work.

psych0 and I use the same internet. Both get dropouts simultaneously.

http://www.wireshark.org/   run that on your PC
it monitors every packet your PC sends and recieves
each type of packet has a dif colour   try see what causes the dropout

mine would run fine for about 5min, then you would see a sort of "bottleneck" (eg, heaps of red packets start bunching up and not sending)

optus were saying this was 100% my issue, my hardware or internal wiring...
i ran this for 4 days on 2 machines and then sent them the results,  had a free tech out in 2 days :P

i would def advise that to your ISP, that would be the cause of your drop outs. they would need to do some fault finding for it. i had to go through this last time i had adsl and they gave me some bull crap of ahve to pay for it if there was nothing there but they found an issue

you could call them on the line to show them how bad it is for example

true, i also ran wire shark for a little bit and all is well except for it has an issue with the following ip 69.4.231.52 Everywhere that ip shows up the line in wireshark is red but everything else is fine.

im pretty sure 69.4.231.52 is a wireshark ip,  just did a whois on it and it goes to riverbed.
Riverbed is on the wireshark website

Probably go back to unplugging reggies computer. You sound bigger than him, so enforce your power as the largest apex predator. Maybe follow through with eating food off his plate and pissing on his bedroom door.

Why stop there, there are alot more effective methods to prove dominance over another male.
I have watched my dog perform these actions in the local dog park and i reckon he knows what hes doing.

Try the following;
Biting His Ear.
Rooting Him.
Pissing on Him.
Raising your hair.
Showing your teeth.
