Title: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 09/01/2012, 12:42 PM Hey Guys my old router recently died and we got a new one Linksys E1000 (http://home.cisco.com/en-apac/products/routers/E1000) router (got form bohica a while back)
now i have run into a weird problem the router does not like having another switch running behind another one so on the old netgear router it would go router - TP link switch - netgear switch - my pc's the TP link had 2 switches running of it but now with the Linksys one each switch has to run directly to the router otherwise anything connected to the second switch will not get a valid IP address i have not found any settings that would cause this and was wondering if anyone has come across this before because to my knowledge it should still work as it previously did Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Chalice on 09/01/2012, 12:46 PM If your having problems with the switches not working, go outside and check the fuse box mate, may have thrown a safety switch.
Hope that Helps, Chalice I.T Guru Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: DonutKing on 09/01/2012, 12:56 PM What address do your devices on the second switch get? Do they get a 192.168.x , 172.x or 10.x address? Or do they just get the windows default 169.x address?
If you manually set your devices to a valid unique IP address on your network with correct gateway/DNS settings can they access the network? do any of your switches have a DHCP server enabled? It should be disabled if so, only the router should have it enabled Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 09/01/2012, 01:38 PM the ranges that it gets now are 192.168.0.x for all computers connected
now when the switch is behind a switch the IP's are the self assigned IP address 169.x.x.x i have not tried to manually assign the ip address and none of the switches have a DCHP function that is all up the router Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Syklone on 09/01/2012, 02:43 PM DK has it nailed for info - but curious whatst he models on all the network gear you're using ?
Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 09/01/2012, 02:55 PM DK has it nailed for info - but curious whatst he models on all the network gear you're using ? i would have to check when i get home but it is 2 x gigabit switches and 1 x 10/100 switch i use downstairs Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: DonutKing on 09/01/2012, 03:27 PM probably a silly question but have you got the latest firmware for all switches and the router?
Can you swap the switch in the middle and the one on the end around? I've heard of some routers setting their DHCP multicast traffic to a TTL of 1 so it won't go past the first hop - but if all your stuff is on the same subnet and the switches you're using really are just switches (and not one of those home routers with the 'internet' port and a 4 port switch - and there's nothing funny going on like VLANs) this shouldn't be your problem. Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Damit on 09/01/2012, 05:07 PM I asked him some questions on it
Swapping switches around makes no change after second switch no device gets an ip Previous router worked with no issues with this config He said he will check for firmware updates My advice is to check through dhcp settings on router Google router model and issue as it may be a simple setting change Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 09/01/2012, 05:15 PM yep going to check for firmware updates when i get home and donut they are just home switches nothing fancy (to my knowledge)
will update when i get home tonight Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: BoHiCa on 09/01/2012, 05:15 PM Last resort would be to firmware update, as this is only consumer ware not commercial
Quick test, do this bring all hardware upto you pc. 1 / plug router directly into you pc, do you get an ip? 2 / if yes now plug in router to first switch, then to you pc, do you get an ip? 3 / if yes now plugin in router to 1st switch, then to 2nd switch then to your pc, do you get and ip? if you answer no to any of these, turn router and both switches off. factory reset the linksys router, repeat steps 1 2 3 if no on any steps i will be on later to help :) Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 09/01/2012, 05:45 PM it is always no on step 3 mate, i was planning to have a look later on to check for the rest of the info for the router and the switches
i am glad i am not the only one that thinks that is weird, we were wondering if we were going mad at home ty for all the help and suggestions so far Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Syklone on 09/01/2012, 07:21 PM Sorry to be a bug bear but have you got the switch details yet. Sounds like a hop restriction but it would be nice to know all the hardware instead of being told a router and a couple of switches. Like saying you have two cars and a bike but not elaborating what types :p
Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 09/01/2012, 08:26 PM the router is a Linksys E1000 router
switch no 1. = TP link TL-SG1008D switch no 2. = Netgear GS605 v3 switch no 3. = i think it is a tp link 10/100 5 port switch (not vital to network) Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: DonutKing on 10/01/2012, 06:59 AM I'd still try manaully assigning a valid, unique IP to the devices on the last switch, if they can access the network with a manual IP then that suggests its definitely a DHCP related problem rather than some other configuration or connection issue
Title: Re: New Router Setup Post by: Alucard on 10/01/2012, 08:18 AM well i did a firmware update last night and it has seemed to fix the issue
