Title: PR CTD
Post by: centrefield79 on 28/02/2011, 01:59 PM
Ok guys got a problem with PR CTD'ing every time i go to play online.
I can play it in single player type mode , i mean o when i make my own server, but when i go to play online in a server like BigD of or any ones like them, it CTD as soon as it goes to load in.
I have tried it with normal BF2 and its is the same.\
Tried heaps of things but can not work it out.
I recently upgraded some stuff in my rig ( mobo, power supply , cpu cooling, case), i did a new install of my OS and had backed up my HD , everything else on my HD seems to of worked but not PR.
I have reinstalled PR as well.

Any thoughts of what i have done wrong or need to do, been trying to nut this out all day.

What Version Of Windows= Vista 32bit
Garphics Card Drivers Upto Manaufacturers Date= yeah , updated them again today, with no luck
Punk Buster Service Installed Correctly = yeah reinstalled today , with no luck
Punk Buster Upto Date= yeah updated when i reinstalled again no luck
BF service pack version = yeah but downloading 1.5 service pack again now to make sure.

I use to be able to play no problems at all never had any sort of CTD before, will try the new service pack update and see how that goes. Thanks for the reply

remember (i believe this is still correct) that you MUST download and install the prior patch first .

look up PR install guide for more info

I used to have a lot of trouble getting BF2 to run on my computer when it was Vista, and since Win7 is pretty much the same my problems continued, but basically I did this.

1) Install BF2 > Install 1.4 patch > Install 1.5 patch > Install PR 0.957e

2) On the PR exe file (not the BF2 one) right click and go to properties. Go to compatibility. Set to run as administrator. Tick boxes for Disable visual themes and desktop composition.

3) If your computer is the shiz bomb (or even probably not these days) you're probably running everything on high. Make sure you set your graphics card program to application controlled for AA, then in game:

Disable Anti-Aliasing.
Set textures to medium.

If this fixes it, you can try turning AA back up to 2x. It should run on 2x.

4) Try that. If you still have problems, it might be related to your resolution. I had trouble with it crashing when I tried to use a resolution different to my screen. If this is the case try changing your resolution to something lower and see if it will run.

So here's the cliff notes for how I made it not crash all the time on mine.

Run as admin.
Disable visual themes.
No desktop composition
Textures Medium
AA 2x
Resolution same as screen.

And even then it will still crash every so often, and if it's like mine, not play some maps at all. Fucking stupid BF2.

Alot has changed bud,.. i'd like to say that some of my recent games have not been good due to having to relearn how to do things, but i'm just shite really.

In the end

1. Reinstalled BF2
2. Downloaded and applied patch 1.4
3. Downloaded and applied patch 1.5
4. Reisntalled PR
5. Reinstalled Punkbuster
6. Updated Punkbuster
7. Drunk lots of coffee and used must of my downloads up.

I don't know what happened and why i had to reinstall everything , i was all on my HD and seemed to be ok, the old patches i had did not work when i used them so i had to download them again.

As for the settings i only have it running as admin and all vid settings on high.
It must have been something wrong in one of the patches.

I thought this as well but i had used my patches so i dismissed it was them but i downloaded them again it it worked.
