nah your story is more plausible Chal. It's standard military doctrine to blow the shite out of an invasion site with atillery first, then send in the infantry. Starting with infantry is just stoopid.
Personally, if I was invading a planet and bent on genocide. I'd start with a couple of waves of highly contagious diseases, something like the spanish flu, anthrax, or ebola. Release one disease simultaneously at multiple population centres, wait a few months, then release another, repeat as required. Then wait a few months for the survivors to gather, and hit them with orbit to surface bombardments.

The only problem with nukes is it makes it hard to move in afterwards, though I like your style. Instead of nukes, I'd go asteroids. I figure if you've managed interstellar travel, then you've managed how to land on and mine asteroids to get raw materials to repair your ship with, or to harvest ice. Instead of nukes and their radiation. Just grab a couple of asteroids and smack them into the planet, the impact of a decent sized asteroid puts nukes to shame, enough impacts and you fill the atmosphere with enough dust to block the sun and kill everything that survived the blasts.
Yeah Ice I've read quite a few earth invasion stories, my 'plan' is half from one book, half from another. The problem with most of them is the invading army always has some weakness that lets humans prevail, and more often than not, it is stupidity, drives me up the wall.

bageled, i was reliably informed by an expert that when dealing with an infestation on a planet (indigenous or other) , the best thing to do is to bug out and nuke it from orbit. It is, i hear, the only way to be sure.

I dont think in a situation where ANY "alien" is going to travel light years to arrive here will "just be friends".

Its inbuilt into everything we know that is alive (single cells, bacteria, animals, plants, even stars, etc) that must kill to survive. Its a survival instinct to kill or be killed. If this instinct wasn't there then that species simply wouldn't survive.
There are very few that have a "friendly" relationship and these have developed over a LONG time - like years at minimum.

I think it would be safe to say that anything that arrives from another planet wont be friendly.

Personally, I think they would use the natural powers of the planet to cause devastation.
Like cause floods, earthquakes, disease, etc.
It would mean they could carry less and do it from a distance. 

The next question is what would they want and how would they take it?

Though pretty much any element could be more easily mined from asteroids, no indigenous life, no gravity well. I'd say either colonisation of the planet, slavery of humans or some unknown element unique to our planet, like Unobtanium ;). I love that name, it reminds me of the briefcase in Pulp Fiction, it is almost pure metaphor.

anyway they dont have to kill us as soon as they get here, that hasn't always happened through history, when the english came over here they told specifically "not to murder, abuse or molest" any of the natives. it's just obvious we arent gonna be happy with the little fuckers and we'll try killing em first.

In my book they  just crack open the planet, think walnut. No big explosions..just huge chunks of the planet breaking off and floating into space (large asteroids/meteors are the debris from other planets they've done this to...how they get tracked) , the effect of lava and the earths core meeting the vacuum of space etc.  

They dont want anything..just getting rid of the competiton...not that we were,  but we were starting to spread out further from our planet and they spotted us..so they come and fucked shit up.  The fact that they didn't want a thing allows me to add a real sense of almost evil, in that they cant be spoken to/negotiated with ...they're not even pissed off at us...they just did it and the survivors (In shuttles)  cant understand why they did..such a waste etc.

Was thinking of changing it to they want the Core of the planet, they use it as a power source ..something like that..shall see which works better.
